We are planning a 3 week trip from March 8, Family of 4 kids are girls age 9 & 16
Ever one wants to start off at Disney World and theme parks in the area for a week. Then we would like to adventure more of the state hoping to make it to the keys.... Not sure which side to explore ocean or gulf sides or both....any advice or anyone can suggest??? Reply to this

Welcome to Travelblog, and the adventure of travel! Florida is a very diverse state with much to experience beyond the theme parks. The "best" things to do depend on your family's interests. One group may want to spend all day on an isolated beach, for example, while others would find that boring in the extreme.

In general, the Atlantic side of the state is more built up while the Gulf side is more wilderness. The former has a long string of beach resorts, whose atmospheres range from quiet family spots to all-night party towns. The gulf side features wildlife refuges and wilderness parks between the cities. Just south of St. Petersburg on the Gulf side is Fort DeSoto beach, a barrier island with no development that many polls rank as the best beach in the United States.

The keys can be reached from Orlando in one day of driving. Its a good six hours plus in the car through scenery that isn't very exciting until reaching Miami. The keys are beautiful. March is still high season, so accommodations will be hard to find unless you've already reserved.

I personally find the state's natural areas well worth visiting. If seeing the keys, Everglades National Park is a must afterward. On the Gulf, head to any of the natural springs north of Tampa or Myakka State Park. Bring the strongest insect repellant available; the mosquitoes will be merciless. Reply to this
