Budget travel possible in Sri Lanka?

Hi. I'm thinking of going to Sri Lanka at the end of this month (July). I've done a bit of research online but the information found seems to vary. I want to travel fairly cheaply (budget of around $50 per day) and only have three weeks to do so. For anybody who has been there. Would this be enough? (I like a few beers in the evening). Is it comparabale to travelling around SE Asian countries? Bit worried about the weather too as it will be monsoon season in the southern part of the island. Any advice would greatly be appreciated. Within 50$ per day, You can go to Vietnam. U can get a hotel with around 15 ~ 20$ per single night. and so many special foods in there. Its really cheap. In Vietnam, you can visit Hanoi, Sapa, Halong...

Hi Alan
We spent 6 weeks in Sri Lanka September to November last year and loved it. It was the second time I had been, the first being in 1999, and as you can imagine the prices had gone up, a lot! However, we had a budget of 50GBP a day for two of us and found this to be ample. We stayed in some cheap places and some mid-range, travelled on public transport (not much fun, but you should try it) and by taxi. The most expensive place to stay and to get to was Aragum Bay on the east coast, was it worth it? I’m not sure, it’s great if you want to surf, as my husband did, and the beaches are nice, but not amazing, although Whiskey Point is work a tuk tuk to, lovely beach and only one beach bar, making it very chilled out. The cheapest and most enjoyable place for us was Mirissa, lovely beach, cheap food and accommodation. There is the occasional party night here, but is easily avoidable if that’s not your thing. The stand out accommodation for us was a place called Coppenrath in Tangalla, lovely family great rooms, cant speak highly enough of this place, they really want to make your stay special and I think we paid around 7GBP a night, if that. We were out of the peak season, so there is bound to be some upping of prices, but all in all Sri Lanka is a wonderful exciting county to visit and you can do a lot on a small budget. Enjoy!
Please let me know if you need any detail.
