Hey Guys,

My friend and I are heading to London from Sydney Australia late August to meet up with 2 other friends and are heading to Oktoberfest. We are doing a 5 day Conkiti tour heading into Munich on the 27th. I so cant wait.
There is the option, after the tour, to head back to London with the group but we want to find our own way back.
We will have about 4 weeks travel time in total so after the tour we have 3 weeks to get back to London. We have not booked flights yet but plan on doing that in the next week.
We are trying to figure out a rough itinerary to go off.
A rough idea is:
  • Austria
  • Prague
  • Amsterdam
  • Belgium
  • Paris
  • Spain (Barcelona?)

I threw Spain in there as i really want to see it, and i know its in the total opposite direction!
We don't mind taking the odd flight, if we were to go to Spain.

We want to get a bit of the feel for the counties, but not stay forever. We'll be looking forward to the night life, people and attractions.

Being my first overseas trip my idea about this could all be wrong? Could these destinations be done realistically? What would you guys recommend, where to go and for how long?

Any help is greatly greatly appreciated
Thanks, Josh Reply to this

Hello Josh and welcome to Travelblog!

This is a strong itinerary, but would recommend flying between Prague and Amsterdam is that is within your budget, the rest you can take by train. I particularly like Switzerland, but mainly if you favour places of natural beauty. The journey between Barcelona and Paris is a long one (by European standards) so you could chose either plane or train.

You could easily see these places in a month without rushing, so you are giving yourself enough time to see everything. I would allow about four-five days each for Prague, Amsterdam (due to being a smaller place, maybe three-four days) and Barcelona, one week for Paris, and split the remaining time between Austria (definitely Vienna and Salzburg) and Belgium.

Re your flights, see if you can grab an "open-jaw" fare, that is where you fly into one European destination and out of another - saves a lot of backtracking. I did this on my previous visit to Europe - flew into London and out of Rome - and this cost nothing extra. Reply to this

Hi there, I am not sure when you will be in Europe, you mention August but the Oktoberfest is in October? However, my point is that the weather is always important when you travel. North of the Alps from mid-September onwards is usually rainy and chilly. South of the Alps is a better choice in this respect. If you go to Austria why not continue into Italy, which has so much to offer. Good food, good coffee, cities like Venice, Florens and Rome. September and October will be warm and the chances of rain slim. The train ride through Innsbruck to Italy over the Alps is spectacular. You can easily spend weeks in Italy, but if you choose two, three cities for a week to 10 days you would get an impression. From there you can fly to Amsterdam, Belgium is very close so easy by train, and then onto Paris by train. In this itinerary I would skip Barcelona though it is a lovely city, but it is out of the way. Reply to this

Hey,

Indeed Barcelona is far from the other cities you want to visit, but it is a great city and worth the detour. I would do it like that if I were you.

Munich, Wien (4h)
Wien, Bratislava (20min)
Bratislava , Praha
Praha, Berlin (there is very cheap bus ticket, check it up)
Berlin, amsterdam (7h)
Amsterdam, Brussels or Brugge
Brussels, Paris
Paris, London (eurostar)

Now where to fit Barcelona, well you can't skip wien and just visit Salzburg (my personal fav) and then Fly to Barcelona and then to Praha. However, flight from Spain to Czech rep are not cheap. I happen to find one for under 100 euros two years ago but was flying from Madrid to London city and then transit for 8h before going to Heathrow to fly to Praha.

Anyway, enjoy it. Oktoberfest is wild and great fun.
