Can anyone recommend a decent, cheap point and shoot camera for backpacking?

I have a Canon Rebel, but I don't really feel comfortable taking it with me backpacking, and it'll be quite the added weight. Instead I'd like to bring a point and shoot. My existing one just died on me - with my trip only one week away, I need to order something online ASAP!

Any suggestions?

Thanks a ton as always,

Hi Meg,

Commiserations on your camera dying!

Could you give us an idea of what you call 'cheap', that will help people make suggestions within the right price range. Reply to this

My Panasonic Lumix died after about 1.5 years. It was the lens cover that finally did it in. I did tons of research, learning that about 10% of most point and shoot lens covers will give out because they are fragile. The strongest lens covers (and fewest problems) are Sonys, which is probably best for backpacking. Sony is not my first choice for image quality, but I went for sturdiness.
Good luck! Reply to this

Sony NEX5...not cheap...but if you want a light, superb point & shoot...I believe there is no better. Only problem...you may prefer it to your Canon Rebel DSLR! Reply to this
