I was thinking of doing this but it seems kinda pricey for my budget. Have any of you done this? would i be better off doing my own thing in Thailand with the money?

There are two reasons i would like to do this

First: I would love to live, learn and work with the people and the elephants.

Second: I will be traveling alone for the first time and i am afraid i will not know what to do when i get to thailand. I would hate to just stay near the Bangkok airport until I go. I dont think i would do that but its just the worst case senario.

If any of you have any ideas i would love to hear them! Thanks a bunch!

Hey 5user5,

I am going to Thailand in March and like you I am traveling by myself for the first time too!! Little scary but excited. :-) Anyhow, I really wanted to work with elephants too! Did alot of researching and I found this great place in Northern Thailand. It is called the "Elephant Nature Park" a woman named Lek Chairet owns it and she has programs where you can stay a couple of days or a couple of weeks. You get to feed and care for these elephants. Everyone on Trip Advisor has said it is an amazing experience. I will be there for 1week! I don't know if you have been on Trip Advisor but I am getting so much info for my trip!!! Check it out. Also, I have been told most of the elephant parks around Thailand mistreat there animals, I have only heard of the Elephant Nature Center and where I am going which seems to be the best, Elephant Nature Park. I hope you are having a great time on your trip!!! Hope this helps. :-) Here are the links below. Happy travels :-)

Ms SORAIDA SALWALA is the founder of Friends of the Asian Elephant In Lampang just south of Chiang Mai. Her life and work with the elephants in Thailand has been documented and shown on a special called CROSSINGS on The Discovery Channel.

My wife and I have been to the center and elephant hospital many times. Ms SORAIDA's dedication to the elephants in Thailand is remarkable and almost cost her her life when she first started the project. Elephant owners in Surin Province threated her and she had to have police body guides for several years before they relised the benefits she provided them.

She has a project where you can volunteer your time taking care of the elephants. All you need to do is pay for your meals and transportation to the center. You can see Her web site and contact details at http://www.elephants-soraida.com/

Thanks for the input. I had been corresponding with someone at "godifferently" because they have a program. I decided to not use them after reciveing a nasty email from them when i asked if they could somehow assure me that the elephants at there park were treated well. I do not recommend them at all. They are also over twice as exspensive as Lek's "Elephant Nature Park".

We have been helping out with a program where you can work with elephants and mahouts in Thailand. Check it out on our blog.
