Hi Daryl and welcome to the forum. Your question has no replies because it's a bit too wide open and India is such a big country.

Do you have any idea of the type of thing you'd like to see? How will you be travelling? Will you be on your own or with someone else? Will you be on a particularly tight budget? It's that sort of information which might get people to respond. There's a helpful bunch of experienced travellers on TravelBlog - they just need a starting point.

For my part, I've visited India many times over the years and the highlight has always been the warmth and kindness of the people. So, wherever you decide to go, be sure to interact with the locals; you'll need to think about how honest they are of course - you'll be a walking wallet as far as some of them are concerned.

Where to go? Well, the usual Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Varanasi, Khajuraho, Kolkata stand out, but the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala vie for attention too.

What to avoid? Anything that's been cooked and simply kept warm - Delhi Belly awaits! Remember that the left hand isn't used for eating (for very good reasons), but it does seem to be used when cooking!

Where to stay? See first paragraph above - it depends on how you're travelling and your budget.

Try posting again with more details of your trip and, with luck, you'll get some more-specific replies. Whatever, I'm jealous of you spending a year in my favourite country!
