Narok Central Business District Chairman David Sankok says over the last two years traders in the town have lost property close to Sh350 million to floods.

Recurrent floods destroyed the town’s sewer system and deposited raw waste in the town during the last rainy season.

Sankok says whenever it rains, traders in the town live in fear of incurring losses as the rains usually flood their business premises.

"When there was heavy flooding two years ago, Prime Minister Raila Odinga toured the town and promised to have the drainage system repaired, but nothing has happened so far," said Sankok.

Wheat farmers have also not been spared by the vagaries of weather in the agricultural rich district.

The Chairman of the Narok Farmers Association David Mpatiany says more than 20 farmers have to replant after their crops were swept by the current floods.

Stranded for five hours

"The floods have also made roads impassable forcing us to suspend most of the farming activities," he added.

At the Masai Mara Game Reserve, a group of tourists were on Monday stranded for about five hours as a result of the floods. "In Suswa some of the residents have relocated to higher grounds fearing the floods," explained a resident. Reply to this
