...There is just something about this picture that I cannot put my finger on; the warmth, the posture, the direct gaze from the half-smiling eyes and corners of the mouth (aloof, assured and warm), and the light sweep of the stone on which he is perched, contrasting with the heavy supporting column to the right. Further, the subdued shade of the background colouring, simple and soft, draws out the personality of the subject, who takes up just the right amount of space in the picture to give that sense of location.
