Sorry if this has already been posted somewhere but I couldn't find anything recent.

We're doing a RTW from the start of March and will be entering Thailand from Malaysia in early June. Being from the UK I understand we can get 15 days at the border but we're more likely to be there for 20ish.

I read that we can apply before hand for a 30 day tourist visa but this would have to be used within 3 months of issue which means it being issued while we are away.

Is there a way we can easily extend the 15 days once we're there or preferable anyway to get it sorted before we leave?

Also, how important is the proof of onward travel for Singapore and Malaysia as we don't really want to book too much in advance?

Thanks,

Also, would it maybe be easier and cheaper to fly within Asia? Will flights still be cheap if we get them a few days before each flight? Reply to this

Get the Thai visa in a neighbouring country before you enter Thailand, or do a visa run after 15 days and get another stamp.

And yes, it's easy and cheap to fly the big journeys in Asia. Sometimes it works out cheaper than travelling overland. YOu can get some great deals if you book in advance but it's quite cheap last minute as well.

Check out Air Asia, Jetstar and Cebu Pacific for a start. Reply to this

I entered and re entered thailand about 6 times in my SEA trip last year. Never once was i asked where my next country would be..good job because most of the time i didnt have a clue! so proof of onward travel isnt a problem atall.

I found flying in asia very cheap, even last minute, often alot cheaper than traveling overland and SO much less hassle. [No overland trip is ever as it is sold in asia, more often than not you are left for hours after you are due to depart, dropped off in some unknown destination to wait for other transport which is never as it was sold as etcetc, at least with air travel, you know what your getting, what time you will arrive and the service you expect.]

Airasia is a bit like the ryan air/ easyjet equivalent. vietnam airlines, jetstar [some rather swanky planes for super cheap] and cebu pacific are all good :)

Im trying to remember the name of the thai airline...the one that has the planes with eye lashes for a girl plane they fly from the smaller airport in bangkok? We found those to be very cheap too :) sorry i cant remember the names!

Generally though i would recommend air travel over busses. except if you plan to travel by train through thailand, i thoroughly enjoyed that and it was insanely cheap a single from chang mai to auttuaya was cheaper than a single bus fare into town here inthe UK! it was a 12 hour journey, with reclining seats and on board meals!

Same experience here, never asked what my next destination was!

I got 30 days visa, I think if you arrive at the airport that is standard, only when we arrived overland from Laos we got a 15-day visa. So it might be worth flying into Thailand and saving you the hassle (you can also risk overstaying a little bit, apparently you pay 500 Baht/day but if you overstay by a lot there are risks so I would not do it myself.)

I fly with AirAsia to Vietnam, Myanmar and within Thailand and usually booked a few days in advance, some flights are easily filled (e.g. BKK-Krabi) and that was an expensive one. On the way back from Phuket in fact, Thai Airways was the cheapest option compared to the many lowcost airlines. There is also Nok Air, 1-2-3 Go but I wasn't too keen on them. Air Asia is a good deal, Vietnam Airlines was also good.

Trains in Thailand were nice, comfy foldout beds, so also worth a try! Reply to this
