Budget expectations

I am planning on taking a short trip to Peru in August. I am trying to get an idea of how much I should average per day.

I am goin to Peru for a month in August. I am trying to figure out about how much it will cost me per day. When I travel I generally stay in cheap accomodations (i.e. hostels and other guesthouses) I don't buy too many souvenirs and I eat at street stands and hawker stalls.

How much do you think I should budget per day? Reply to this

Hmm. Its been awhile, but in Cuzco if you split a room with someone you're looking at about 20-30 soles for a hostel or pensione (or maybe cheaper... I didn't scout around too much). In Lima there might be cheap accomodation like that, but you might end up paying american to dollars for a hotel room. I think I remember in Puno that hostels ended up being 12-15 soles split with a couple people each.

As for food, if you're sticking to street stands you might be able to get away with paying 5-7 soles per meal or 15 in a set menu tourist restaurant in Cuzco.

As for transportation, there is definitely tourist class (where there arn't people standing in the aisles and trying to sit on your armrests) or local class (far cheaper... but keep a close eye on your bags).

I love street stands but I hope you have a cast-iron stomache. Even so, I would strongly strongly suggest investing in quick-dissolve immodium (don't get the ones you swallow because its most likely going to get puked right back up), rehydration salts and a large prescription for ciprofloxin (the generally strong antibiotic that kills germs that stick around after immodium). I stuck to the rule of not eating anything that wasn't cooked, peeled or boiled in Peru and still managed to get seriously ill within the first month of being there (and similar story in India... despite my belief that I had a cast iron stomach). Doctors and pharmacies are sketchy in Peru and its a drag to be seriously ill that you have to fly back to Lima and see an American doctor.

It really depends where you'll be visiting in Peru. For example, staying in a room above a tienda in the mud-brick village of Chachas, I spent nearly US$4 per day. On the other hand, I easily spent over US$60 per day in touristy areas when my girlfriend flew out to join me. 😊

I was able to easily budget US$30 per day trying to get back into some remote regions of the Andes and Amazon. Even in the touristy areas it is still pretty cheap. For example, in Arequipa you can easily find $10 rooms with beautiful views of the colonial city.

Enjoy Peru! It is beautiful and friendly--especially in the areas off the heavily-worn backpacker path.

Thanks for the responses. I had had sort of figured on about $30 us dollars a day. So it sounds like I should be fine. Reply to this
