Hi guys,

Im in the process of planning a trip to China and was wanting some ideas of the perfect itinerary. I've never been before so I'd ideally like to go to Shanghai, Beijing and Xi'an. What are the best things to do there? Is there anywhere else you'd suggest?

All suggestions welcome

Cheers

The three cities is the standard tour of China, each with it special flavor. You don't mention how long you have for your trip, but I would suggest at least 3 days in each city not to rush it too much. Beijing highlights are the Great Wall, Forbidden City, temple of heaven though there are many other sights as well. Xian is a city with a long history, terracotta army (outside the city), inside the city the walls, pagodas, a great museum. Calculate one day for the terracotta army excursion. if you have more time you can visit the Hua Shan one of the famous mountains in China, can be done as a day trip (spectacular scenery) Shanghai is a fairly new city, very modern. Great waterfront, a very good museum, but I think it is the modern development that makes most impression on a first time visitor. Around Shanghai there are two historical cities (at least) worth a visit Hangzhou with the famous West Lake (very beautiful park landscape, museums etc). Suzhou has a number of famous gardens in Chinese style, and other historical buildings. Can be visited as a day trip from Shanghai but nicer to spend at least one night, there are many things to see. All these cities are big (Shanghai 18 million, Beijing 12, Xian 6, etc) so commuting within the cities can be time consuming.

Be aware of scams in all these tourist cities, people who want to practice English, take you to tea or art shows, sell you incredibly cheap mobile phones. But in general Chinese people are friendly and helpful so I don't want to scare you, just use your common sense.

China is huge and there are many places worth visiting. For a first-time visit a cruise on the Yangtse is a great introduction to China. You get to see a lot of countryside (spectacular at some places) but also the modern China. And it is relaxed and laid back as compared to the hectic cities.

Be prepared for very hot weather (well over 30 degrees) and polluted air in the cities!

Sorry, I meant to say, I have about 19/20 days. That is great already. Would anyone like to add to that? Reply to this

Indeed, China has myraids of places of interest worth a visit. In line with your requirements, Beijing, Xian and Shanghai are the tourist destinations for those foreigners who pay their first visit to China. As for Beijing, as the capital of China,Beijing is a superb cobmination of modernization and profound cultural tradition. In the light of this, the following tourist attractions are highly recommended: the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Mutianyu Great Wall, Badaling Great Wall, the Summer Palace. And if you are inclinded to experience the modernization of Beijing, you are suggested to visit National Center for the Performing Arts, Olympic Green where Water Cube and Bird's Nest locate. Definitely, there are countless alluring attractions in Beijing derseving your visit. It depends on how many days you will stay there. As for activities in Beijing, from my humble opinion, you will feel free to take an active part in various sorts of activities such as have a taste of palatable traditional Chinese food, Beijing roast duck in particular, or enjoy Beijing Opera, playing Kungfu and etc. It is also your option to decide whether to purchase some souvenirs like pearls and silk in the bustling and prosperous commercial streets.

As to Shanghai, the international metropilian city, typically attractive tourist destinations are Yuyuan Garden, Shanghai Museum where you will be speechlessly struck by marvelous Chinese history and culture via diversified antiques.Definitely, it is also very popular to pay a visit to the Bund, particularly at night to sense the prosperity of this metropolis. Other strongly recommended attactions include World Financial Center, People's Square, Xintiandi, Jade Buddha Temple and so on. you can watch acrobatics show, go to the bar to experience the luxury of Shanghai in the evening.

As to Xi'an, definitely, Terra Cotta Warriors, Shanxi History Museum, Big Wild Goose Pagoda and etc all worth visting. Chinese Dumplings are the most pupular among tourists. Maybe you can also have a try if you fancy.

Since I am also fanscinated with travelling, from my personal travelling experience, if this is your first time to travel around China and especially last as long as 20 days, the following tourist destinations are also as splendid as the above listed ones:

Guilin known for its karst landform and exotic picturesque natural sceneries under the sun, it really deservs your travel. Tibet is also a great place for your visiting for its sacred buddhism spirit and its complicated but abrupt canyons, precipitous mountains as well as luxurious virgin forests. Hangzhou typically renowned for West Lake, Suzhou known for its unique gardens all worth visit.

As for the itinerary, it depends on where you will land, Beijing or Shanghai, then to make the most appropriate itinerary for youself. Hope the above information will be helpful and wish you a happy travel in China. Reply to this

Hello Friend,

Travel to Shanghai if you want to see the traditional atmosphere of the country. The place is unique and original with the presence of traditional culture in it. Travel to Beijing can be more exciting in comparison to travel to Shanghai as Beijing comprise of modern as well as traditional culture of the country. Beijing is the capital city of China and is famous for the history it possesses. Travel to Beijing can be planned under touring companies' package which includes guide, tour buses and complete assistance in the facility of staying.

Thanks a lot again,

The great wall "secret wall tour" at Leo's Hostel is amazing - no one else is on the wall with you!

I would highly suggest Yangshou - just below Guilin. Guilin is a nice springboard - but just for a day stop - Yanghou is the place to go!
