Thinking about weekend trips out of Stockholm

Which is more worth my while: many weekend trips, or a few longer trips lasting 1-2 weeks?

Hi there,

I will be in Stockholm for just over 5 months for exchange studies, beginning in August. For reasons that are too tedious to explain, i would prefer, during this period, to go on many short, weekend trips rather than longer ones extended over one or two weeks.

That said, i'm thinking that this may not be ideal, since i'll need to fly in and out of Stockholm many, many times, which can't be very efficient, both in terms of money and travelling time. Also, many of the cities i'm planning are close enough that it would make sense to visit them one after the other, but this would be hard to do if all i have are two-day blocks.

I'm wondering if anybody has any experience or any thoughts on this matter. This is my first time planning my own trip, so i need all the advice i can get

Hi Kevin, it would help if you tell which places you want to visit. However, to go to Finland (Helsinki) is very easy, just take the overnight ferry, you can also visit Poland and the Baltic countries by ferry. Oslo and Copenhagen you can do by train.

However, if you want to visit Continental Europe it probably makes sense to do it as a longer trip, although there are cheap fligths and you could do it in a weekend (Ryan Air, Norwegian are a couple of cheap airlines).

When planning do think of the weather, during the winter the weather may not be the best in Europe, it all depends where you are going of course (Germany cold, Mediterranean cool and rainy). Reply to this

Highly recommend camping in the Norwegian Fjords, weekend in Helsinki (fun 1 night cruise there and back), Trip to Talinn, and as stated above, you can fly to just about anywhere in Europe for pretty cheap. Dont forget st. Petersburg. As above, try to do as much travelling in the North early (Aug-Sept) and save the south for the Late Fall/ winter months) Reply to this

It is now possible to visit St. Petersburg for a day without a visa. Ferries depart from Helsinki and Stockholm. Information about hotels in stougolme here as well.
