Hi,

I have a visa electron card and I am wondering whether that will work in prague, specially for the ATMs or I should get some CZK from exchange before leaving for czech republic.

For example, is there any ATM in the airport to take out czk using my Visa electron card?

Thanks. Reply to this

When we travel we find it best to use a credit card whenever possible. The exchange rates are generally better and you don't have to carry around a bunch of money. With that said there will be places that will not take credit so you will need to have some cash on hand.

There are ATMs in Prague, including the airport.

It's difficult to say which is the best method for obtaining cash because it depends on what cards you have and what their terms and conditions are. A credit card is certainly convenient for paying for purchases, but most incur a foreign transaction fee (typically around 3%) and possibly an additional exchange rate commission. For withdrawing money, using a credit card will also incur interest charges (because it's a cash advance), making it probably the most expensive way of obtaining cash. A debit/ATM card is generally a better choice for cash withdrawals, though may still be subject to a foreign transaction fee and exchange rate commission. Have a look at your various cards to see what the fees are.

I don't know where you're from, but I would guess that (like with most foreign currencies) you probably won't get a good rate by buying CZK in your home country. Just as an example, tourist rates for CZK in the UK are about 6% lower than the "real" market rate, which makes it a worse option than using your ATM card once you're in the Czech Republic.
