We were in Ladakh last year when the area experienced a freak 'cloudburst' and mudslides which buried many homes and sadly, many people as well. Both roads out of town were closed down for a week, fuel was scarce and the overall feeling was of barely contained fear for some time (on a couple of occasions, panic-fueled evacuations were sparked by rumours and fear, even on blue-sky days). It was of course terrible but at the same time I'm glad we were there to witness it and do what we could to help out.
...and then the sky fell on Leh.
Then less than a month later we had to take flight from Srinigar in the face of a mass-riot coming down the street (not as uncommon in Kashmir as one would hope). We were helped greatly by an old guy who guided us out of town via the backstreets on his motorbike.
