Virgin traveler seeks itinerary suggestions for upcoming 30-day trip to China.

I am a virgin traveler flying into Beijing for 30 days in a week and a half. After five days in Beijing, I am wide open to suggestions. I want to travel low (train/bus) and slow (less destinations/longer stays). I plan on moving onto Thailand by plane (unbooked yet as I have a one-way to Beijing) the end of April.

I would like a taste of the cities but definitely want to see the countryside. Some of the places I am thinking about including are Xian, Chengdu, the Tiger Leaping Gorge trek, Guilin and Shanghai.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have backpack, laptop and open-mind. Reply to this

Hi there,
Be prepared for different weather, Xian and Beijing will probably be cold at this time of the year, so bring some warm clothing or buy it once there, clothes are cheap. Southern China will be warmer of course.
Xian is really nice, with lots to see, apart from the Terracotta soldiers. There are a number of sights around the city, for example the Hua shan mountain, though difficult to climb you can take the cable car for fantastic views, if the weather is OK. You can do it as a day tour by bus or train from Xian. I also liked the ride their through the loess landscape, with cave dwellings, dug into the sides of the hills.

While Shanghai itself mostly offers shopping and bars etc. the nearby cities Suzhou and Hangzhou are great destinations with lots of historical stuff, pagodas, gardens, temples etc. I also liked Shaoxing which is a smaller town (by Chinese standards) and have some nice back streets with canals, it is very close to Hangzhou.

In this area there is also the mountain Huang Shan which is spectacular, and quite easy to climb. Best is to stay on top of the mountain over night, but it is quite expensive. Do leave ample time to trek on the summit, the scenery is breathtaking.

I also like Yunnan a lot, it has a different feel than the big cities, with all the minority people and so on. Guilin I found overrated but of course the scenery is again fantastic, but it is too much geared to tourism in my taste.

You probably need to restrict yourself to a few areas, if you dont want to rush it too much. China is huge, and transportation takes a lot of time if you are going on trains and buses. Make a rough plan and see how much you can fit in, but do leave ample time for all travels. Even within the huge cities transportation can take the best part of the day.

happy travels

Guilin has a wonderful natural beauty and it offers views of mountians, crystal clear water and various caves. The main attractions here are Li River, Fengyu Cave, Reed Flute Cave, Elephant Trunk hill, Seven Star Park, Fubo hill, Solitary Beauty hill, Longji Terraced Field in Longsheng, . Reply to this

Beijing is great of course and then fly down to Guilin and take the Li river day cruise to Yangshuo and stay there for a couple days....great Night show on the river with over 900 local people in it. Then from there go to LiJiang where the Tiger Leaping Gorge is located and perhaps up to Shangrila in the mountains. From there you can fly to Kunming and down to Bangkok. For the amount of time you have; you will appreciate these areas best. Reply to this

Hi,this is Allen, one local guide in Xi'an more than 4 years, since you only have some 30 days in China, you could do a lot of intresting things.I don't know what kind of traveller you are since there are different type of tourists, some like history and culture, some like natural scenery and delicious food and some other ones would like to stay close to the locals .But anyway, you should go to Beijing,Xi'an,Shanghai and Guilin, those are the most classic tourist destinations. There is a saying in China,"If China is a big tree, you may see its leaves in Shanghai because it's very prosperous, you may see it's crown in Beijing since it uesed to be the capital for some 700 years ,but you will find it's root in Xi'an since the most glorious past uesd to be there".And also, you may go to Suzhou and Hang zhou ,which are pretty close to Shanghai, those two places are the ideal places for relexation physically and spiritually.
