How many TravelBloggers have tatoos?

Do you mind sharing-
1. What is your tatoo?
2. Where did you decide to put it?
3. Any particular reason you made that selection?
4. Are you still happy with it?
5. Did it hurt?
6. Are you considering additional tatoos?

Me 😊

1. I have a backpeice/sidepeice that covers my rib cage from just below my left shoulderblade, down over my kidneys and cheek of backside onto top of thigh..its a castle and wizard and mountains - I also have a giant iguana on the other shoulder who goes from the tip of my shoulder across my back and down over my spine - also have an anklet with feathers and beads - tribal native indian style I guess - also have the back of my neck done - a latin inscription fortes fortunata aduviat which translates as fortune favours the bold/brave.

2. All my tatts have been in less obvious places due to my job..the only one you can really see is my anklet and thats a fairly sedate tattoo - all the others are on my back.

3. They all have a story - the iguana - I was kissing an iguana when I first met giant - the typical pay 100bht have picture with big lizard story...although i have always held a fascination for marine iguanas who like the deerlike creature are on my bucketlist and I donated a bit of research time and a few $$ in fiji to help build a sanctuary for the fijian crested iguana. So the iguana reminds me of thailand, fiji and well...you never know how many lizards you need to kiss to find a giant 😊.

The wizard and castle piece was done 20 years ago...more perhaps..it was an evolving peice that started with a wizard on my bum then grew up my ribcage and across my kidneys then had more added to it in NZ in the moko style about ten years later. I really have no explanation for why that design there other than one of the tattooists who worked on it had a really stupid sense of humour and did the wizards face to look almost exactly like my ex husbands face..so I guess he (the ex) is kissing my butt forever. The moko style stuff underneath that goes down to the top of my thigh is a reminder of NZ.

The anklet..done after my second son was born so 15 years ago almost, just a spur of the moment design i drew up from a dreamcatcher - every bead represents a family member, the feathers represent my sons.

The latin inscription across the back of my neck - done the day after I had my first racehorse win a race. Theres so many sayings in racing about luck and fortune that one just sort of fitted. Its a bold move to get into racing, throwing thousands of dollars at a what if....the stupid sport where you can spend $100,000 to go from here to heaven or hell in less than 59 seconds. But when the planets align and your horse wins, its worth every single cent, they dont call it the winners circle for nothing. And probably that particular inscription because when I first bought my first horse and got into racing someone asked me where my husband who was financing my interests was. When I explained I was financing my own interests and didnt need a husband to be in the game they answered..."thats very bold of you". Elitism still exists in racing.

4. Mostly..given my time again I probably wouldnt have a huge portrait of my ex husbands face on my bum but I can still find humour in that...I struggle a bit with the size of that peice as it covers half my torso - its a big peice and cannot ever be covered up completely if im swimming no matter what sort of bathing suit I buy.

5. Yes and No, certain places hurt more than others, Ribcages with detailed tattooing = sheer idiocy. I spent 7 hours stretched out having my ribcage engraved so yes, that hurt. The areas that hurt are generally over bone. Iguanas tail on my spine and edge of shoulderblade hurt a bit.

6. Yes...I think I need a lotus flower at the top of the inscription on the back of my neck..id like to incorporate a design from the carvings at Ankhor Wat around the lotus blossum and bring it all into one peice.

Giant -

Has sleeves from just below his elbows fully covering both arms up under his armpits and over the top of his shoulders (he said the bit under the armpit hurt the most) - originally a collection of tattoos over 30 years all now pulled together with shading and waves, japanese carp and lettering etc. Will be having the sleeves connect across the top of his back done in 6 weeks in the japanese style of two dragons sprouting from his sleeves.

Woke up with lightning bolts tattood across each side of his neck after getting drunk with thai tattooists..I am very keen for him to get more because underwater when diving it looks like he has one set of gills either side of his neck LOL..so I keep asking him to get two more lightning bolts either side so he can have gills. He tells me no normal human wants gills. I tell him no normal human has their partners mothers name tattoo'd across their arm either - his name is Malcolm, so in his 20s he had his name tattoo'd on his arm under a quite nice orchid...as was the fashion in the 80s, he had MAL put in a scroll underneath it. My mothers name is Madeline however she has always called herself MAL.....so.... I guess he really wanted to make a good impression when he met my family...look mum, he wanted to fit in so much he had your name tattood on his arm :-) He also has a spray of stars down the side of his neck...but theres still room for gills. I don't mind sharing... 😊

1. I currently have a tribal piece on my upper right bicep and a full sleeve on my left arm that extends from my cuff, up and completely across my left shoulder blade. the sleeve is in the Japanese style with a Koi on the forearm, and a phoenix on the upper arm spreading one wing across my shoulder blade and the other down my bicep. the koi has a background of water and the Phoenix has clouds. I used to have a tiny gecko on my shoulder blade which was my first tattoo but that has now been completely covered by the sleeve.

2. For the tribal and gecko it was more a case of keeping it discreet. For the Sleeve, it was much bigger, by a much better artist and costing a fortune so I wanted it as obvious as possible, and I love the look of full tattooed arms. I could also cover it by a long sleeve shirt if I wanted too, although first I'd after buy one as I only own T-shirts...

3. The tribal was just fashion at the time. The Gecko was just a case of I became old enough to have a tattoo so I wanted one... I went in the shop, pointed to it on the wall and said 'I want that one...', oh the stupidity of youth. 😊

The sleeve was kind of a present to myself. I'd been diagnosed with cancer at 26, got cured, took time out to travel the world with my wife and it was kind of like a marker point for all that we'd been through and done. The Koi has loads of meanings depending on what you read, the courage to overcome adversity and also good luck and good fortune are the ones I associate with mine for obvious reasons. The phoenix is a symbol of re-birth, and this may sound stupid, but I think I'm better off having had the cancer and beating it. You never really know how much inner strength you possess until you're tested, I now know I've got it by the bucketful.

4. I obviously wasn't happy with the gecko which is why it's now gone. The tribal, I'm in two minds about. It's just black pointy things, it's not offensive, it's not huge, it's not badly done, but when I'm shirtless you can clearly compare it with the other arm and well it just looks a bit crap! My sleeve I couldn't love any more if I tried, the colours are insane, the scale of it is amazing, the detail, the meaning... I look at it all the time, touch it and smile... I looooove it!

5. Yes... simple answer... the smaller ones were ok, obviously bearable as I'd only have half a tattoo on me. The sleeve covers so many parts, and every part was different. Going over the tendons on the wrist was 'interesting', the crook of the elbow a little eye watering, as Cindy's Giant says the arm pit hurts like hell, but for me the elbow was the worst. I had to bend my arm as much as I could to tighten the skin right up, it's right on the bone, and you can feel every vibration transmitted through the bone, the bad thing was that as the skin there is so thick, I had to have it touched up three times... agony, but it's done now and looks great, the price you pay for vanity, hey. Huge parts of it were just like constant scratching and you just become numb to the monotony of it after a while, just zone out with your iPod.

6. I'd get more tomorrow if I could. I'd ensure to choose the artist, subject and placement well though. I'll eventually have my other sleeve done, and probably a full back piece. I think the thing that annoys me most about the tribal is it's taking up valuable real estate on my arm where something much larger and much better could be placed. I've enquired into getting it covered and been told that it'll need a couple of laser sessions to fade it a bit, so it remains to be seen whether I'll choose that route or just fill up the arm and hope it gets lost in the background. 31 tattoos by 26 artists in 14 different countries. All have some meaning to the their country. I also have the Statue of Liberty kissing my arse. I figure if I ever get kidnapped in some obscure place it may just save me. Reply to this

From Sophie... Dale will probably do his own answer!...

I have a few tattoos...
My first was a purple sun on my hip.. I had it when I was 18 as I really wanted a tattoo and just picked out any old picture in the shop.. made the same mistake when I added a chinese symbol to it a few months later.. I can't even remember what it means! I hate both of them now and am glad you can't see them.

My next one was my sagittarius on my lower back. I spent quite a while researching for a picture I liked, someone at work found it for me eventually and I'm glad as he died a while back so it reminds me of him. I love this one but hardly ever get to see it because it's on my back! I got this for my 21st birthday.

When I was around 26 I got 3 stars on my wrist, I still love these. They don't mean anything I just wanted stars on my wrist for ages and one day just thought "today I'll get it done".. so I did! At the time stars weren't so popular but everyone seems to have them these days so I like to think I started a trend!

Just before we went travelling I got my biggest tattoo which was a birthday present from Dale. This is by a really long way my most favourite which is a good job as it was a huge investment in money, body space and pain! It goes from my hip to my armpit and is a kind of flower design. I spent ages and ages looking for something I liked on the internet and ended up seeing a photo of one and using that to design my own which I why I like it so much. I'm told that having a tattoo on your ribs is one of the most painful places which I will fully agree with. It took around 6 hours and I had to do it in 2 sittings because I couldn't endure the pain any longer the first time!

My last tattoo I got I got in Thailand when I was drunk... it was one of those times when you wake up blearly eyed and think to yourself "did I really do that?!".. oh yes I did and I have a star on the back of my neck to prove it. Motto here is do not get drunk in a bar that does tattoos in Thailand!

I love tattoos and fully intend to get more. At the moment I am toying with the idea of having a robot on my other ribs.. I have a weird fixation with old skool robots so this is likely to be my next piece and I may even go wild and have it in colour!

1. I have one on my upper left arm
2. It's the Chinese symbol for eternity
3. I was young and in love and wanted something to show my boyfriend that I'd be his for ever........18 years on we're still
together!
4. I still love it and it makes me smile every day
5. I have a low pain threshold (ie I'm a cissie!) so yes, it hurt - a lot!!
6. Want to get what my daughter refers to as a "tramp stamp" on my lower back but considering the whole pain issue....!!! Reply to this

I have one tattoo, just below my waistline on the right side. It is of a long stemmed rose. I dont have a photos of it, even though I meant to take one for threads like this one. I am happy with the tattoo. I thought about it for years before I actually had it done, and then I chose a tattoo artist with a very good reputation. It didnt hurt much. It was like somebody writing on me with a sharp pencil. I made this selection because it looked good, when I put a drawing of on transparent paper against myself. I was going to get a lilly, but the rose looked better, mostly because the colours the lilly could be were too pale to look striking enough from accross a room.

Here is a photo of another bloggers tattoo, to make my post look nice, since I dont have a photo of my own. 😊
