Itinerary ideas for Singapore and Malaysia for 8 days. 3 November - 11 November 2010

Hi,
on 3rd November my partner and I are travelling to Singapore, we are here for 8 days. and want to make the most of our trip there.
We have booked the following flights;
NZ - Singapore; 3 November
Singapore - Kuala Lumpur; 3 November
Kuala Lumpur - Singapore; 6 November
Singapore - NZ; 10 November

so I have 2 FULL days in Kuala Lumpur (or surrounds) to fill in AND
pretty much 4 FULL days in Singapore.

Im looking for some fun/cultured activities, with perhaps some relaxing time back in Singapore from the 6th.

I need ideas on things to do, was looking at Sentoas Island for somewhere relaxing. Anyone know of anywhere close and secluded where we could go?
Also, would like to make the most of the shopping in these countries. So any good shopping malls that you can suggest would be good. Havent booked any accommodation yet, just our flights, so will be booking based on your suggestions 😊

Thanks HEAPS in advance.

The must-see attraction is the Singapore Zoo - but the Night Safari in particular. Even if you don't like zoos (and I don't) this one is special. The National Museum of Singapore is also worth looking at and so is the Raffles Hotel. The newly opened SkyPark at the Marina Sands hotel is getting solid reviews, but I have not been there.

As for shopping, you will find KL to be cheaper, so if you are in Singapore first, have a look at the prices and then compare them with KL, and if Singapore is cheaper (unlikely) then just wait until you return before you make your purchase.

I personally don't like shopping on Orchard Road in Singapore, mainly because they seemed to be filled with fashion stores, which is not preferred type of shopping. My favourite malls are those away from Orchard Road such as Suntec City Mall. In KL, if you are into electronics in any form, then Low Yat plaza is the place to go - some of the best priced shopping you'll ever find - it is an essential stop for me on any visit to the city.

As for accommodation in Singapore, there are some amazing choices. If you are prepared to spend at bit more you will be well rewarded. A few months ago I stayed at Pan Pacific Singapore (as opposed to the Pan Pacific Orchard) and it was the finest inner-city modern style hotel I've ever had the joy to sleep in.

Thankfully, you are heading into an area with some of the best food you will ever eat - hawker food at the markets are particularly tasty and cheap (especially in KL). If you have a spare day in Singapore think of attending a cooking school.

Just a word of caution, both Singapore and KL have high humidity and very warm conditions. Unless you are used to this weather, it will tire you quickly, so try not to pack too much into every day otherwise you will just wear yourself down. As a comparison, I live in Brisbane, Australia (a sub-tropical city) and it similar to this city at the height of summer. Reply to this

Thanks for your feedback! Very helpfull.
We have booked into Marina Bay Sands for our last night in Singapore. So very much looking forward to that.
Flying out to Malaysia as soon as we arrive, so will concerntrate on shopping while there 😊 before coming back to Singapore.

Had a quick look into Sentosa Island, what are your thoughts? It looked quite touristy and fake. Worth a visit?

Do you have any idea of what the island Pulau Ubin (North Singapore) is like, found it on this website; http://www.yoursingapore.com/content/traveller/en/browse/see-and-do/nature-and-wildlife/island-retreat/pulau-ubin.html
and looked quite interesting.

Will definately take your advice on the heat thing, and make sure we dont plan to do too much each day. We are coming from a winter in NZ, so will be a bit of shock leaving the airport i think 😊 Reply to this

Touristy and fake are accurate observations of Sentosa - I didn't think much of it at all, there are much better things to do in Singapore.

Have not been to Pulau Ubin (as your link to the government website shows) but it does look nice and would be a different experience from the main city.

One other thing, if you wish to try something different, you can visit the Jurong Bird Park and enrol in their "Be a Falconer Programme" - it isn't cheap for the short time you have, but if you love birds of prey, then this is for you.

Lucky you for staying at Marina Bay Sands! It does look a beautiful hotel. When I left Singapore, the shuttle bus stopped there and collected some Korean tourists before heading to the airport. The Koreans reported to me that the hotel was "very nice". Reply to this

If you like flowers go to the Botanic Garden in Singapore, the orchid section is spectacular. If you don't particularly like flowers it may still be worth a visit, people picnic, play with their kids and jog and it has a nice feeling about it. The Sentosa island is for tourists but I think it was quite nice, if you take it for what it is. We took the cable car there, which in itself was a great ride over the city. There was a museum of the history of Singapore which I found interesting, and the aquarium was worth the visit. Also good for strolling although the heat and humidity makes it a bit tough to be outside, one has to take it easy and drink lots. Reply to this

Kuala Lumpur, or "KL" as it is commonly known, is the focal point of new Malaysia. While the city's past is still present in the evocative British colonial buildings of the Dataran Merdeka and the midnight lamps of the Petaling Street night-market, that past is everywhere met with insistent reminders of KL's present and future.

Singapore is pretty good attraction in Asia where unique culture outstanding beauty with plenty of popular destinations are located which attract tourist and visitors comes from all over the world especially for Sentosa, Singapore Zoo, Universal Studios, Chinatown and Boat Quay are the main tourist’s attraction.
