Been through much of North America and Scandinavia, some islands, and am currently travelling around the far east.

Just counted and will be at around 28 or so by the end of this trip, but I still feel like I've seen nothing yet.

I really would love to check out South America, Africa, New Zealand, more of Europe, etc... Reply to this

Found that this company actually helps you get discounts on your travel and stay if you just fill in a survey! Soo worth it and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to keep travelling and save some money!! 😊 Just visit their site for more information!

Check out <snipped>

However they include "872 countries, territories, autonomous regions, enclaves, geographically separated island groups, and major states and provinces."

Using their list I have been to about 141 places, in reality it is probably closer to 70 sovereign states.

This is the kind of question that sort of gets me a bit peeved. I have so many friends who love to stop in a country for a day or two or three and then put a "tick mark" next to its name--tally one more passport entry. One of the best travel quotes I have ever heard is "Tourists see the world, travelers experience it." If all you want to do is say that you have seen a country, then this is fine. However, if you want to experience a country, its people, and its culture, you really need to settle down there for at least a couple of months (longer, if possible), learn a bit of the local language, meet your neighbors, and become part of the culture. This is a much slower way to travel, and your count probably will be a lot smaller, but I guarantee that you will have a lot more fun!

we've been to 71 and according to the travel map on our page that is 26% of the world territories. if we worked out a percentage of the area of the countries we'd visited it would be significantly less.
for some it may be ticking a box but in order to get a flavour of a place you do need to immerse youself there for a while - however with so much to see and so little time that may not be possible! Reply to this

Cool blog - only came across this today.

Currently standing at approx 130 - I'm 22 and travel for a living (Lucky me!) - I am counting various territories, for example: Vatican/Monaco/territories owned by other countries - for example French Polynesia, Guam, Falkland Islands, French Guyana, etc. I'm not counting Iceland (countless stopovers - looks beautiful from the air, and I will visit there soon, I promise!), or North Korea (emergency landing on the way to South Korea - engine trouble! God bless technology and it's ability to fail at the most inappropriate of times!). Fav country - Kenya. Off next week to Pakistan (first time visit), have been told about a possible return visit to Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda in September/October, and hoping for Iraq in November/December!

Edited note:
I agree with those of you that say tourists see the world, travellers experience it. I am an AID worker, I work on emergency missions and back-up missions with an international aid organisation. I keep a diary of the work I do, and sometimes, I read back through it, and I come across journey's and think "when did that happen". I would love to go back to many countries that I have seen - the South American/African continents are possibly 2 of the most beautiful areas that everyone should be made visit. On a related note, my favourite country (Kenya) is a country that I was based in for a year - it was my first and only long-term stay in any country, and I can safely say that I would jump at the chance to return there, or to stay long term in any country.

I guess though, I can say that while I don't experience the country and its' culture(s), I can remember the smiles of the people/families/communities that I have helped along the way, and I hope I can continue to "tick boxes" in this way for many years to come.

List of countries: (I used Wikipedia for this - hence the alphabetical order! I may have missed a country or two - apologies!)
Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Angola, Antigua, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, Belize, Bhutan, Bolivia, Bosnia, Botswana, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burma, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, CAnada, Cape Verde, Chad, Chile, China, Colombia, Congo (DRC/RepC), Costa Rica, Cote d'Ivoire, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Rep, Denmark, Dominican Rep, East Timor, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Estonia, Ethiopia, Finland, France, The Gambia, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Guatemala, Guinea, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland (Don't count - I'm Irish!), Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Kazachstan, Kenya, South Korea, Kuwait, Latvia, Lebanon, Lesotho, Liberia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malawi, Malaysia, Mali, Mauritania, Mexico, Moldova, Monaco, Mongolia, Mozambique, Namibia, Nepal, Netherlands, Nicaragua, New Zealand, Niger, Nigeria, Norway, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Rwanda, Samoa, Saudi Arabia, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Serbia, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Slovenia, Solomon Islands, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, UAE, UK, US, Uzbekistan, Vatican, Venezuela, Vietnam, Zambia, Zimbabwe
