Need suggestions of where to visit!

Although I am currently in the planning stages of a world trip I am far off being able to afford to do it the way I want to (I imagine a couple of years more saving and I should be good to go). But in the meantime I plan on doing a couple of weekend trips each year (nice cheap ones) and also a proper holiday once per year.

Last year I spent 3 weeks in spain as well as a couple of weekend trips to Amsterdam. This year I need suggestions of where to go. I am also looking at being a little more adventurous this time - maybe going a little further, or doing something a little different.

So where abouts would you guys recommend going to for a main holiday (prob a couple of weeks long, maybe shorter or longer depending on the destination)?

Also some suggestions for weekends away (a couple of my mates will be turning 21 so we are looking at something exciting for a weekend trip)?

Any suggestions are more than welcome!

Cheers. Reply to this

I'll take it that you are living in the UK?

Two years is about how long it's gonna take you to save (unless you earn mega-bucks) and you're gonna have to be pretty dedicated and cut down on lots of lifes more exensive pleasures! It will be more than worth it, I promise you.

We have been saving HARD for 18 months now (2 to go) but that didn't preclude us having a summer holiday (an important and necessary expense for us). We went for a two week blast around Egypt as it was new to us, culturally interesting and, most importantly, cheap to get to and relatively cheap on the ground. From the Uk all North African countries are serviced by cheap carriers (especially out of season), do not take an age to reach and will feel a world away from Europe; giving you excellent experience for your trip to come! Turkey and the Middle Eastern countries could also be an option, as would Eastern Europe.

As for short breaks - pack a tent, some beer, gather your friends and enjoy the wonderfull countryside all around the UK!!!

Hope this helps Reply to this

Hello Abbadon 😊

The choices are endless. Is there at least a particular continent which appeals to you most?

If you like nature, then what you could try Kyrgyzstan. I liked it there, and unlike other Central Asian countries the visa is easy to get. The flights to get there tend to be expensive though. I payed over 700 Euros return from Munich, Germany. You would need to be careful which time of the year you go though, because of the extreme temperatures. It is almost untouched by tourists, which is something worth experiencing.

Another place I would love to spend more time in is India. So far, I have only been there for 1 to 3 weeks at a time. Maybe you would like it too. It is a country you can fall in love with and out of love several times a day, when you are there. I love it and hate it at the same time, but I am always longing to go back there. If you are flexible about when you go there, you might get a real cheap flight, and being there can cost very little, so wont cut into your travel savings too much. I have managed to score flights for 400 Euros return.

And east Europe is always worth going to, if you dont want to go too far. I presume you live in Europe.

Aye, I'm living in the UK (london).

@scottandanny - Yeah i'm not earning mega-bucks. I work an office job fulltime which gives me a decent income and have recently started working part time in a pub as well to increase my saving capabilities (and i figure knowing my way round a bar will help if i need to get work abroad). I cannot physicaly keep going for my 2 years saving time without atleast the odd holiday in between, as my feet are too itchy as it is!

I have been to egypt before and stayed in different places along the nile, seen the temples, pyramids etc.. And the only down side seemed to be the amount of hassle you get from beggers and street sellers. I figure other northern african countries will be fairly similar? I have to say i'm not as attracted to the arab countries as to asia or south america.

And you made me laugh loads with the Camping idea! My friend has been begging me to go camping round the UK with him. I may have to take him up on it (provided we go somewhere i can fish and cook the fish! - i have a strange fascination with being able to catch, kill and prepare food - thus would love fishing or hunting - unfortunatly the UK isn't the best place for hunting, maybe fishing though).

@Mell - I wouldn't say any particular continent calls out to me - just that i'd rather avoid the middle east and predominantly arab countries (atleast until i have done a bit more traveling on my own). Kyrgystan is a country i have looked at and is on my list for my round the world trip. i may have to have a look at flight costs.

As far as india goes i am very intrigued. I would love to go and experieince the culture. But i wondered if a short break of a couple of weeks would be long enough to take it in properly? I had always assumed it's the sort of place you go and stay for a month or two?

Eastern Europe i think would be fun. I have a friend who lives in lithuania so i could stay with him if i went there for a while, could maybe then train down to poland?

I am very flexible with my travel plans. I don't care what time of year i go away and so can try and book holidays whenever they are cheapest.

How about Vietnam or Thailand, or even Cambodia? Are they worth going to for a short period of time? I have heard hotels etc are cheap in SE asia so could maybe not eat into my savings much by heading that way?

Also, any ideas for short weekend breaks? So far Las Vegas is the only one i've got in mind, but it's fairly expensive to do. Any cities which are known to be good for weekend breaks?

Anymore commetns etc are very much appreciated 😊

Cheers for the help so far!

Hey Callum,

Do some bloody work at that office job of yours and get off the internet!!!

India, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia - all truly amazing countries to visit but as you surmised probably best left for part of your rtw trip as they do, especially the incredible India, require more than a couple of weeks to really appreciate. However, as Mell said, India IS both cheap to reach and cheap to enjoy and you could, especially in shoulder seasons, get a good package deal to Goa for a couple weeks and dip your metaphorical toe into the crazy ocean that is India that way.

Vegas? not much hunting (animals) there!

I'm in the office on my own today, so i can get away with slacking!

Yeah i figured they where probably best left for my rtw trip. I may have a look at what is available as far as packages to India are concerned though.

And yeah i know Las Vegas isn't gonna be hunting :p But with 21st birthdays incomming i want to plan a memorable weekend/short trip. As well as my proper break to somewhere a bit more cultural.

Keep the suggestions comming! 😉

Make sure you include Costa Rica on the World Trip portion of your adventures. I live here and this country is not to be missed if you have the opportunity. Reply to this

Hi my friend..! 😊
You went around Euro already. So would you go to visis some country in Asia? For example Vietnam - our country. I recomment you to go to some place : Halong bay, Sapa, Hanoi.
In 2010, we have great festival - Hanoi 1000 years old. How do you think?
The price - 😊 - Don't mind about that. Vietnam is nice country with peace and friendly and happy country but the price is not expensive. Here, u can take the payment by card : Master card, visa .... if you want, yo can exchange some money.
The service is good also.
Cheers

Whats the Australian dollar looking like for people in the UK at the moment? (ok so i googled, 1 Australian dollar = 0.582712874 British pounds). Be careful though, there are lots of British people who don't go home after visiting Australia. Reply to this

Hi my friend!
About Thailand, It's really nice country but in this moment, they have some trouble with government and politic.
Vietnam, here you can see any information about our country, about price, payment. In here, nice hotel about $45 or $46 per night is OK.

If you are planning a long trip my suggestion is New Zealand. I have plans to go there in a short time. I have been told that New Zealand is amazing. However, weather in winter is not very nice cos their winters are mostly rainy therefore summer sounds better. 😊)) Reply to this

A holiday together with a trip to the theatre is an excellent choice for a short break holiday. It is like killing two birds with one stone. Not only are you able to enjoy the highlights of the place, your holiday reaches its highest point with a fantastic theatre show.

Try Prague, Copenhagen, Budapest, Zurich, Venice, Paris, Berlin or Bratislava etc ,you will be relaxed and feel like a home in these cities of Europe.. Reply to this

I fancie Isael but at a later point in life, preferably towards the end of my big travel trip (which i won't be able to afford for atleast a couple of years) - this is partly due to the fact that with an Israeli stamp in your passport you are rejected entry into some countries are you not? (I may be wrong!)

I may well try one of the places you have mentioned Sean. I'm leaning towards Berlin or Budapest if i go away for a weekend. But i have a funny feeling i'll get dragged along to another Amsterdam trip soon. Maybe i could go for a couple of days before or after that, hmm. Which of the places you have listed did you prefer? Israel, amazing...New Zealand, proper...

Might have to roll with Queensland myself...

Has a fair bit of everything, lifestyle, nature, adventure, infrastructure for day trips or to travel completely independently.

Just heard that National Geographic has plans to air a 6-part TV series about Ben's "Best Job in the World"! Should air sometime in August and could be a little helpful if you decide that Queensland / Australia is the place for your next trip! Reply to this

Israel - You can ask in the border in Israel that they do not stamp your passport, but stamp a separate sheet and then you have no 0problems visitng other countries...
