When is your trip? The airport is way out of town away from any protest areas and I don't think the government will ever let that be taken over again! When I was at the airport 2 weeks ago there were several checkpoints guarded by the army and police.

Hold off on hotel reservations until you see where you want to stay. If you are going there during low season getting a hotel a the last minute is not problem. By the time your trip comes around you may want to avoid Bangkok and head out to another city.
