We are looking at visiting Zimbabwe in Oct, has anyone been to Hwange recently as we would like to add it to our trip?

We are a large group of people, many who have never been to Africa before. We are visiting Vic Falls and wanting to go on safari - is there much game in Hwange at the moment? Does anyone know of any budget accommodation?
Thanks for any suggestions!

Not been for many years, but I heard from someone who went last year who said that a lot of the wildlife had been decimated by illegal snares.
Might be worth considering Chobe in Botswana instead. Not that far from Vic Falls. Reply to this

I agree with Jezz, try Botswana as you can transfer by road from Victoria Falls and are almost guaranteed excellent game viewing.

I haven't been to Hwange recently (its been almost 15 years since my last visit) but I have just read an article about Zimbabwe in the UK travel magazine Wanderlust http://www.wanderlust.co.uk. I can't find the article online but it is in their current magazine which would explain why. They are promoting Zimbabwe as somewhere for people to head back to and in the article they praise the friendliness of the Zimbabwean people, the landscape and the animals.
In relation to Hwange, Mark Stratton says:

I would love to go back to Zimbabwe and I think that at this stage you would have game reserves almost to yourself! Reply to this

Driving deeper into the national park, any concerns that Hwange's wildlife had been decimated were assuaged.
As all Zimbabwe's national parks are accessible by self-drive, I was soon watching a herd of 20 elephants (a fraction of the 40,000 estimated to roam Hwange) from my hire car........By the time I reached Kennedy Pan I'd seen more giraffes than ever in one location, halted for a zebra crossing, and marvelled at sable, kudu, impala and warthogs.
