after some transport help!!!

Hi everybody, Long time reader first time poster.

I\'m planning a RTW trip of 18mths - 2 years leaving March 26th 2011, im in the middle of doing some research on travel options in Egypt and am having a hard time finding any info on transport options between Edfu and Luxor.

Has anyone recently traveled between Edfu - Luxor or Aswan to Luxor via stop over in Edfu. Can you let me in on any info on bus or train schedules ect, Is it easy to get transport from Edfu?
I have researched a little and found that it is probably easier to either go by train / bus to Edfu for a day trip from either Aswan or Luxor ( being closest ) but im traveling on a budget and would rather have my days flow into one continuous trip instead of backtracking.

So far i plan on flying into Aswan via Cairo ( originating from Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania) spending 24 days in Aswan then bus into Edfu spending 5 days before moving onto Luxor for 21 days then train to Alexandria for 7 days train back to Cairo for 28 days before busing it to Nuwieba for a ferry to Jordan.

Also any info on the ferry from Nuwieba would be appreciated, i have found a little info on this topic but am still unable to find anyone who has done this trip from here to jordan or any on accommodation in Nuwieba incase i miss the ferry for the day.

thanks in advance, Chris

Hello Chris, and welcome to the Forum!

I was in Egypt a long time ago, so this may be a bit outdated. However, I based myself in Luxor for a week and did a lot of day trips throughout the area - travelling to Edfu was easy by train, and then once you are there, you just need to get a taxi to the Temple Complex. Taxis loiter outside of the Temple of Horus as well, so it is easy to find you way back to the station. I vaguely remember that at the train station in Luxor there was a large board which displayed all of the trains heading north and south, so I found it easy to plan a journey out of Luxor after I arrived.

Since you are spending time in Luxor, would strongly recommend visiting the Temple of Hathor in Dendara (north of Luxor) - it is superior to Edfu in almost every way. If you wish to see one of the finest temples in all of Egypt, then travel to the less visited Temple of Seti I in Abydos - the carvings within the temple are stunning as they are amongst the most intricate in Egypt and they still retain their original colour. You'll need to get a train to Al-Balyana, and once at the train station you'll be given an armed guard for your entire time there until you step back onto the train. Due to the distance, you'll need a full day to complete this round trip. I was the only person at the Temple when I visited, so you won't be surrounded by the crush of tourists that you find at other sites such as the Temple or Karnak or the Valley of the Kings. Thanks for the reply Camel.

A few of the places you mention are already on my list although i hadnt looked at the temple at Dendera.

But back to topic i was after a little more info on train / bus transport from Edfu to Luxor. I know a few sites / guides ect say its easier to arrange day trips from Luxor to Edfu but i really would like to spend a few days there before transiting to Luxor only if the transport options are viable

For what it's worth, if you can get to Edfu by train easily enough, it would be equally easy to leave. I believe there are accommodation options in that town - but not that many - so you should be able to stay there for a few days.

The site I recommend for train timetables is the Man in Seat 61 - one of my favourite travel websites. I will send you the private message with a link to the timetables you request. There are over 10 trains per day, so there are plenty of options. Reply to this
