Camera Insurance Recommendations please

I'm taking my DSLR to South America for 6 months and then onto Oz. Thinking about camera insurance but don't know where to look...

I want some insurance that's going to be decent cover but isn't going to cost the earth. I never know which websites are genuine or if they are just dodgy...is there a solid comparison site or an insurer that anyone has used and recommends? I don't think I need to be insured in a car with my camera...I'm just worried about theft as I've heard nasty stories that happen in South America but can't not take my camera with me...

Any suggestions?? Cheers! Reply to this

Hello Amy 😊

I am not sure there are any undodgy insurance companies. So many have stories where they tried to claim on their insurance after losing their property and having little or no success and just a lot of hassle and paperwork. Also, if your camera is stolen, you would likely need to make a police report in the place where it was stolen, which could also be complicated and time consuming. Maybe you would be better off just taking as much care of your camera as you can, and then buying a new one if you get very unlucky. Chances are your camera will never be stolen if you are as careful as possible with it.

Hi Amy,
When we traveled to Africa, we 'scheduled' all of our camera gear (DSLR's, Lens, etc) and included it with our property rental insurance. To schedule your camera gear, you will need copies of receipts and serial numbers of your gear. Then if you run into any problems such as camera stolen, the insurance company shouldn't have any problems replacing your gear as it's been documented, as well there shouldn't be any deductible to pay.

Hope this helps,
