Netherlands to Australia (no air)

I want to go to Sydney, Australia from Amsterdam, Netherlands without using air.

I'm planning to do this trip with my friend. I have a Dutch passport as well as an American passport. My friend only has a Dutch one. I imagine I would be better off with my Dutch passport than my American.

The route I would like to take is: Netherlands-Germany-Switzerland-Italy-Tunisia-Libya-Egypt-Sudan-Saud Arabia-Yemen-Oman-UAE-India-Nepal-Bhutan-China-Vietnam-Cambodja-Thailand-Malaysia-Indonesia-Papua New Guinea-Queensland-New Caledonia-New Zealand-Tasmania-Sydney.

(My route in Indonesia: Singapore-Sumatra-Borneo-Java-Bali-Flores-Sulawesi-Moluccas-Iran Jaya.)

I would like to get some feedback about the safety in the countries between Tunisia and UAEand getting visas for those countries.

As for transport, I would like to drive at least to Egypt and if possible all the way to Dubai. In Asia I plan on taking public transport. In Australia i'm not sure yet but i'm not worried about that.

I still have four problems with transport. I could use some advice for this.
I need to find a way to cross:

From Port Sudan to Jeddah (if possible with car).
From Dubai to Mumbai (only way i can think of is by container ship or by yacht).
From Papua to Cape York Peninsula
From South Island to Tasmania

So I would like some info about: safety and visas
transport between cities listed above
what your personal oppinions are on this trip

Thanks,
Jake

Hello Jake 😊

Here are a couple of threads which may interest you.

Travel from Asia to Europe

Although Saudi Arabia is opening up to tourists, there are still quite a few conditions.

For Iran, you would certainly be better off using your Dutch passport. Americans are not allowed to be in Iran without hiring a tour or a guide. Maybe a transit visa is the best option for you for Iran. As far as I know you can still get them at the borders. It is less complicated to get a transit visa than a tourist visa. Transit visas last I read last 10 days. Enough to cross Iran with and stay in a couple of places there for a couple of nights.

Thanks Mell,

I wasn't really considering to travel to Iran (which also means having to go through Pakistan). As I said I would prefer crossing from Dubai to Mumbai.

But thanks for the help, and the other links. And if I can't find a ride over to India I might consider going via Iran.

From Melbourne (South of Australia) to Tasmania, you can take the Spirit of Tasmania which is a ship that crosses the bass strait.

Hi Jake,

Your itinerary looks amazing; I've been to the European countries you mentioned (I live in Amsterdam now) and also Libya, Tunisia and Egypt.

I can't provide you with too many details, but I do remember that traveling around Tunisia and Egypt was a breeze, but when we were entering Libya from Tunisia (by car) we spent 8 hours at the border just because the Tunisians felt like keeping us in their beautiful country a little bit longer. Other than that, we felt incredibly safe in these countries. In Libya it's mandatory to travel with an assigned "guide" (ready babysitter), but they're usually very friendly and helpful and unobtrusive. Sorry I can't be of more help, but just be prepared for some waiting time at borders if you're doing anything time sensitive.

But if you're spending some time in the Netherlands (especially in Amsterdam) and need some tips, let me know! I'm a pro in that city 😊 Though with your Dutch passport you're probably a pro too!

Happy travels!
