17 years ago, July 9th 2006 No: 1 Msg: #6600
I am going to Greece in late September, I am staying in Athens for a few days for a work conference. After it I am planning the following:

2 nights in Mikanos
2 nights in Santorini
3 nights in Rome
2 nights in Florence
2 night in Venice
3 nights in Paris
3 nights in London

Am I spending too little or too much in some places? Where should I spent more time? Should I visit another greek island?
Within Italy what's the best way to travel around, train or air?

Any suggestions will be appreciated!
Thanks =) Reply to this

The route between Rome and Florence is pretty well travelled. It should take you about three hours by train, perhaps 2 1/2 hours if you use Eurostar or intercity which I believe doesnt stop at all the stops. Most people that I know have done the Florence to Venice route by train as well. I know ryanair flies to some of those destinations but I dont know if it goes between italian destinations. Plus, ryanair is based out of smaller airports so if you're pressed for time its a drag as you have to budget about an hour of your time just getting out to the airport on their special bus plus be there 1-2 hours ahead of the flight.

Santorini is super fun. I was just there in May. I would probably stay in Thira which is the main town of the island though its not the prettiest. You do have to take a bus from the main port (which is not in Thira) to the town. If you're pressed for time, renting a car is the best way to see the island. I spent 3 nights in Santorini and I think that was plenty. Going to see the sunset in Oia is beautiful but be warned that there is a massive horde of people trying to catch the last bus (which is basically after sunset) back to town. If you dont make it, well, you have to take a cab. Checking out the red beach and black beaches on the island is pretty fun.

Personally, I've done the whirlwind tour of countries and it leaves you exhausted as you're always on the go and most of your vacation time is consumed in transit. I would perhaps knock a place or two off of it, and just focus on fewer places and spend that extra time wandering down narrow streets, browsing the shop windows, etc. Plus, the more places I go to, the more I get annoyed as I have to figure out where I'm going (I try to do it independent style). It sounds funny but after awhile you get tired of getting lost and you just want to stick with someting you know. Reply to this

Hi Priscilla,

I must agree with Laura, you will be exhausted by travelling across all those country’s. I’ve been 2 times to Greece (Kos and Rhodos) and Rhodos is a collection of all the things that Greece has to offer, friendly people, ruins, musea, ec.. So Kos was a little disappointing and the other islands are a bit the same. Of course this is my opinion. If I was in your shoes, I’ve stay a little bit longer in Rome and Paris, Scrap Mikanos, London and maybe Venice. But that’s, again, my own opinion about those city’s (and I’m not informed about Sontorini and Florence)

Greets,

Tim
