Hey, regret joining the discussion late. I will try and keep it simple.
I guess you guys are from Europe and hence can see a lot of snow all year round in any case. Hence you can choose between three options
Kerela backwaters (5 day trip required)
Adaman's beach (4 day trip)
Goa (3-4 days)
Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur & Jaipur - (8 days) This is the desert belt
Even if you have made up your plans to travel, drop me a mail on indraneel76@gmail.com in case you need any help.
Regards

Hi,
i find here are many quaries about from where to start india tour.I would like to inform
them that India is a very big country and there are lots of things to in see in
every state but for that u have to journy a very long distance. It takes more than
48 hours train journy from extreme north to south or from extreme east to west.On
road travel it is definitly more time consuming and labourious and air service is not
available everywhere. In INDIA West Bengal is the only state where u will find the
beauty of high mountain HIMALAYA in the north and sea beach of BAY OF BENGAL in the south.
No other state has both-HIMALAYA and SEA BEACH.And more over here u will find vast
green plain land with holy river GANGA ,dence forest of SUNDARBAN and almost every types of
natural beauty. Moreover KOLKATA the capital of west bengal was once the capital of INDIA in british period.
so I suggest u to start your visit from west bengal/KOLKATA.I promise u will find here a mini india.
Ask me for any support u need.

Chennai, in Tamil nadu (southern India) is a great place to visit. They have Mahaballapuram (old temples) to visit, as well as The Crocodile Bank, Dakshinchinthra (cultural village recreations), Kapeelaswaram Temple, and Pondy Bazaar for great streetside shopping. I have been there 3 times, as my DH is from there. Chennai has great weather in December, but if you go a tad bit earlier you may get stuck in the rains - they get the receding monsoon. Last year we had some tremendous flooding.
There are some fantastic beach resorts as well - Fisherman's Cove is one of them, and it is a 20 minutes drive to Mahaballapuram, and all the sites in that area. It is also only an hours drive along the coast (beautiful) to Pondicherry - where they have a famous ashram and french influence. Quite warm, but worth seeing. Kitty corner to the ashram is a side street with a famous small temple (I forget the name) - they have a "temple elephant" - you can feed it food for like 10 rupees. Lots of street vendors selling clay pottery and other touristy items.
If you want to shop, you can get famous silk saris there too, and there are 3 major outlets of Nalli's, a very famous sari store in Chennai. They also have major malls and shopping centers, and Konica is where you can get your photos printed cheap and good quality. Some Igreat, cheap, and safe Indian fast food places are Chik King, Mary Brown, Qwicky's (like Starbucks) and Coffee Day. Sweet Lime drink is also very refreshing - make sure you ask for the sweet one - unless you like salted lime juice.
Don't miss out on Chennai - it really is a great city.

Wanted to add that in January in Chennai is Pongol, or harvest festival. Nice time to visit. You will see bulls dressed up and their caregivers go door to door asking for "tea money." Traditionally, residents give them small amounts of cash, and some cloth. Great photo opportunities as well.
