This site is for a travel company but their itineraries are available to download into pdf documents and I have used them as a rough guide for timings and also helps to ensure you do not miss highlights in any given area.
I know people who have travelled with this company and their trips are very good - justvery expensive and you can achieve the smae on your own for at least half the price in most cases!

Here's a good one. You can compare prices around the world, which can help you decide what to bring and what to buy when you travel.

This website is very useful for organising house swaps (ie swapping homes to stay for free) as I've used them in the past - YourHomeForMine.com. There are also niche websites around (such as house swap holidays ) for those that want to travel to a specific region like Australia or New Zealand :-)

Hey guys, I'm in Barcelona right now and its AMAZING. The streets are full of history and the squares and plazas are crawling with beautiful, energetic people. I actually found a great place to stay that's pretty cheap and literally in the perfect location- a 10 minute walk from the beach, 3 minute walk from the metro, 15 minute walk from the gothic portion of the city, and 15 minute walk to plaza Catalunya...the main city square. The website is www.inside-bcn.com Let me know if you want to know more about anything including great places to visit- I'm here for 3 months so I'm starting to know all the good "secret spots"!! I used the following sites when I recently travelled around North America.
Flights -
Skyscanner (Flight Comparison Website)
Hotels -
Online Hotel Comparison (Hotel Comparison Website)
Travelocity
Expedia
Personally I preferred to use the comparison sites as they had the most hotels and offered the best deals.
Also if you really want cheap flights in the US try Jetblue as I got some real bargains (american Easyjet/ryanair)
