My friend and I are going to be in Lima March 2010 and we wanted some suggestions for places where we could go and get a bit to eat or maybe go out dancing. Reasonable hotels? Any ideas?

Zona Norte for Salsa....but you'de better go there with locals.

I love Al fresco in Miraflores. Really great place.

Buena Muerte....this is a small...very small restaurant next to the historico center, but wow....it is amazing...and dirt cheap.

For Pisco Sours, go to the Bolivar hotel....touristy...well...never that many of them, but still really great.

A completely none-touristy place is the Queirolo Pisco ditlieery in Lima. They have a bar next to it...you just eat chese and ham...and drink pisco by the bottle. The place is gorgeous on a goregous square. You need to type Queirolo Santiago on the net to find the address....I always go there with locals, and by the time we leave...well...I would not drive a car for sure.

For the best food in town, but not cheap...it would easily get a two star Michelin, you have Astrid & Gaston. Most of the time, we stay at the bar, drinking chiean, argentinian wines, and pisco. They have a tapas menu which is to die for! For Pisco, my prefer is the Payet...the little bottle with blue label!

Just one more haha La Rosa Nautica!! It's absolutely amazing food and service and the restaurant is at the end of a pier so you can hear the waves breaking beneath you as you eat! Best restaurant i've ever been to!Also there's a really great dessert only served in Lima. Most restaurants will sell it. It's like a caramel mouse thing! Ask around and someone will tell ya the name of it!

The caramel mouse is named Manja Blanca in Peru ,Dulce de Leche in Argentina/Chile and Araquipe in Colombia but the Peruvian version is the best. There is a little shop in Miraflores ,a few shops towards the beach from Pizza Lane,It sells many different sweets using Manja Blanca but my addiction is King Kong ,my mouth is watering as I write.
From the research I did I've been led to believe that a small amount of the origional King Kong movie was filmed in Peru. The town of Lambayeque ,just Nth of Trujillo, decided to make a special sweet for the cast and crew so King Kong was born.Wether or not this is the right story be careful King Kong is VERY moreish.
I took some to my sisters house in England and said I have some dessert for them to try. When I went to have a piece ,later that night, it wasn't anywhere to be found.I asked her and her hubby where it was and they told me "You can't give a gift then eat it" .Fellow King Kong addicts from the 1st bite jajaja

A VERY basic recipe for Manja Blanca/Dulce de Leche is to boil sweetened condensed milk for several hours ,stiring often, until it turns a nice medium brown.I made this once to flavour icecream in my icecream maker but it was nowhere near as good as the origional
