Filipino Female Travelling Alone in Syria

Hi Guys,

I have travelled alone in some of the isolated areas in my own country.
I travelled alone in Southeast Asian Countries but this time I am currently located in the Gulf Region and I might as well take advantage of travelling in the surrounding countries.

I just have one concern though, is it safe for me to travel alone in Syria?
I am staying in Dubai, UAE which is an open city but I know it will be different in its neighboring countries.

I have not travelled in any Arab country before and they may have biases for a woman travelling alone... some have said that Syria is one of the safest countries to travel to but I figure they're mostly Westerners but I don't know how Asians are treated in Arab countries. (I am not implying that Asians are treated badly by a certain group of people, some of my friends don't find travelling there alone safe)

Is it also safe for a Filipino female to travel there alone?

Welcome to the Forum!

You will have no problems travelling alone as a female in Syria. Just dress conservatively and you will be fine.

I met a solo Japanese traveller there and she was having a great time - no issues whatsoever. You will find the Syrians are very gentle and welcoming people.

Have a look at this previous thread, Girl travelling through Syria and Jordan, which ended up being a discussion between Mel (another moderator at Travelblog) and me. It should go a long way to answering your questions and concerns.

Hello Kaladkarin

I went to Iran alone, and am going to Syria alone next year.

Just read all the advice for women travellers in the Lonely Planet guide for Syria, and if you apply it, I dont think you will be in any danger. In fact, in many islamic countries it is considered reasonable to be a real prude by keeping men at a good physical distance from you including never sitting next to them or even shaking hands with them. Also, you need never be alone with a man. Women will also take it on themselves to look after you and include you in their groups, which will guaranee you a lot of safety. Be sure to dress ultra conservatively, to ensure that the women dont dismiss you as 'immoral' and thus not worthy of their support. Also, avoid doing things like smoking in public, or anything that is a 'modern woman' thing to do. If you have things like fashion magazines with you, keep photos of women in evening dresses, underwear, bikinis... out of sight in public.

Hi Kaladkarin,

Welcome to TravelBlog.

I have a friend who ended up working in Syria for a couple of years. She said the people were some of the warmest and friendliest she had ever met.

Hi Jo,
Thanks for re-assuring me.
I am just super cautious since this is the first time I am travelling in the Middle East.
I hope Syria will be a start of my Middle East travels...
