I'm planning on starting off in Boston or New York, making my way down the east coast, then through the southern states, then heading over west to finish the trip in California. I want to travel by train or bus. Would you recommend Amtrak or greyhound? any alternatives? APART from the the airfare which i already have figured out, What is the minimum amount of money i need to save for accommodation, food, train/bus fare, spending money etc..? any other advice? thanks :) LT Larry Taylor Post Count: 6 Msg: #2 27 days ago, October 25th 2009 | Hi anneli, | We welcome you to the US. Hope you will enjoy your stay. July is a pretty good month for traveling ( but be cautious on our 4th of July weekend....traffic on our roads are jam-packed!). I have spent many weeks traveling up and down the east coast on the Civil War Trails, and should be able to help you out on that leg of your trip. I haven't rode Greyhound yet, but Amtrak seems very inexpensive (although in some areas, their routes are limited). Food: $10-$15 a day (Big Mac value meal is approx. $3.95-$4.95 avg). That will give you an indicator of our prices for food. Room: $55-$100 a day Rental Car: $25-$50 a day Souvenirs: varies (my trick is to get a souvenir of a certain place at a local gas station or truck stop....they are relatively the same and are way cheaper!). If you are into the postcard thing: avg. 25-50 cents each. Collectible spoons: avg. $3.95-$5.95. That should give you an idea on the prices for everything else. Entrance fees to museums/parks/ect.-$5-$20 each venue Our East Coast is quite expensive (i haven't been on the West Coast yet). The Southern States usually have better deals on rooms/accomodations. If you are in the Austin/Killeen area, send me a message if you need free tour guide (only weekends). I'm a native Texan and always like showing my state off to visitors ; ) Good luck with your travels. Some places have parking fees. Number of Users: 2 | Number of Posts: 2 | ||||||||||
