| Have you changed something about how you look or dress, as a result of travelling? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Mell Mell Post Count: 14163 Msg: #1 46 days ago, October 19th 2009 | On Saturday in a cafe in Munich, I saw a German girl with a diamond in her teeth. I havent seen teeth jewelery, since I was in Mexico. Maybe that is where this girl got the inspiration for this. | I have changed how I dress and look as a result of travelling. I have adopted a low maintainence but what I hope is an attractive look, as a result of travelling. I even adopted this look, for when I am not travelling. It involves no clothes ironing, and no hairdressers. Debtravel Debbie Post Count: 212 Msg: #2 46 days ago, October 19th 2009 | What I grew to love about travelling was how simple it makes your life. After a while I really appreciated the fact that I only had one or two changes of clothes and possible things to wear - we waste so much time choosing!!! and although I've never been really immaculate in my dress anyway, I liked the fact that I stopped worrying about how I looked and had better things to think about. | Since then I've adopted much more of a relaxed attitude to life generally. I've never really enjoyed shopping or understood what people see in it, and now I have the confidence not to do it! I only buy clothes when I really need them, and I really don't care that much how I look. I hardly have any shoes, and in summer as long as it's warm enough, I just live in flip flops/thongs, because they're easy and I feel relaxed walking around in them. I don't feel like I need to 'have' a lot of stuff and would rather spend my time doing other things than thinking about clothes. Also I wear my hair down a lot more. Until recently I had really long hair like yours Mell, only messier as it's curly - when I was travelling I took to wearing it down most of the time, even in the heat, because I just felt more relaxed that way, and I've kept that habit. I've always struggled anyway and never managed to look 'tidy' like other people, and now I've embraced how I naturally am, more, instead of comparing myself unfavourably against other women. It's a real relief! I'm interested to know as well how other travellers perceive other travellers depending on where they are? eg when I was in India, most travellers looked a bit of a mess like me, but when I arrived in Thailand, I saw a lot of travellers who looked a lot more 'polished' - and loads more women travellers wearing white clothes! How do they keep them clean????!!! I realised in my first week of travelling that it was a mistake to have brought anything white at all! generationk Gen Post Count: 57 Msg: #3 46 days ago, October 19th 2009 | definitely...i used to dress like a normal new york city hood: baggy pants, baseball cap, basketball sneakers and either an oversized shirt or hoodie. | since i started traveling abroad and living in tokyo and montreal, my style shifted more towards what I guess could be called refined. there are still remnants of my nyc style (i still love wearing baseball caps) but my overall style has definitely changed. Some looked neat and tidy, but in a very causal way, while some looked ecentric. Others looked sporty. India had a high percentage of ecentric ones, while Kyrgyzstan had a high percentage of sporty looking ones. In Europe I have seen some wear summer dresses and things like that. How do they keep them clean????!!! ![]() I asked a couple who dressed like that, how they manage to look so clean after a month of travelling in Thailand. They said, the clothes they were wearing were new. I wear those types of clothes on most days. In my profile pic is what I wear when I am going someplace like into the city or away for a weekend. | Debtravel Debbie Post Count: 212 Msg: #7 45 days ago, October 20th 2009 | At the risk of turning this into a girly thread, I'd been thinking that your hair looks really nice in your pic, Mell! Couldn't see it in all its glory in your other pictures. | Yes, thought I'd have a change of profile pic. That one was actually taken in your very own Ireland where I was recently on holiday - hmm, trying to remember where exactly that was now, we took a road trip all round, pretty much following the coast road all the way. That castle I'm standing outside, - may have been somewhere north of Ennis? There are SO many castles in Ireland!!! We had a challenge to see if we could drive for an hour without seeing one and it wasn't possible! Thankfully, it has become safer in the last one or two thousand years. Thanks!!
