What is Hertfordshire like?
14 years ago, October 15th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #89565
I have previously lived in West England and worked in the Borough of Ealing. I am looking to return to England and have an opportunity to interview for a position in Hertfordshire. Im am not sure where the job will be, but I am just wondering if it would be a good fit for me. While I enjoyed London, I would love an opportunity to be surrounded by charming countryside and pleasant towns.

So here are some of my questions:

Is Hertfordshire just a suburb of London?

Are there areas that have a proper English countryside feel?

Does it take along time to travel to different parts of the county?

what is the closest airport? how long does it take to get there? and is it accessible by public transit?

thanks in advance for the help!

Heather

Hello Heather 😊

My ex lived in Hertfordshire. It is a county in England. It would be a great place to live if you live in one of the towns with a train station with trains that go to London. Then you could take day trips to London, or get to Heathrow airport easily.

The nearest airport would probably be Luton. It probably will be accessable by public transport, but I dont know if every town would have a bus to it or not.

There are lots of pretty towns there, with countryside around them.

I dont know how long it takes to travel to the various parts of the country. Not too long, if you have a car, I think.

I have to say there aren really very many "pleasant towns" in Hertfordshire, many of them have been built in the past 50 years by town planners and can be a bit grim, much of the county is just a blur of big shopping centres, business parks and dead towns with no feel to them. Obviously thats not true of everywhere, St. Albans is pleasant for instance. I wouldn say its a "suburb" of London, its countryside rather than suburbia, but its common for people who live in the counties surrounding London to commute into the city to work.

Luton and Stansted airports are both close by and accessible by train and local buses. It obviously depends where in the county you are for how long it takes to get to them. Live in a place with a train station and youll be able to get to them and to London, and to other parts of the country more easily.

Maybe my ex lived in a particularly pretty town then. It was Hitchin. Beautiful old town square with pretty pubs and cafes, and all kinds of restaurants and shops on the side streets, with big supermarkes on the edge of the town. Reply to this
