Bangkok & Kanchanaburi

1 day in Bangkok and 2 days in Kancanaburi. What's best for me?

I land in Bangkok at 11 am on November 4. I fly back from Bangkok at 4 PM on November 7. Need suggestions to plan my route to see the following in and around Kanchanburi:
1. Floating market
2. Erawan Falls
3. Tiger Temple
4. Bridge on the River Kwai
5. Hell Fire pass.

If this is not possible with the time on hand, what can be avoided?

And a quick city tour in Bangkok to cover:
1. The Grand Palace
2. The best Park / Garden

Is this doable? If required I can hire a cab to save time. Help appreciated.

Thanks. Reply to this

That is a tight schedule. Do you like to rush around? 😉

If I had that much time I would spend the first night in Bangkok. Take a ride on the pasanger river boat. Just go to any boat pier. It should cost less than 50 bahts to get from one end of the river to the other, if you take the passanger boat, rather than the one that takes tourists on tours for 600 Bahts.

Then take a taxi to the Grand Palace. You might not have time to go inside though.

For gardens, I recommend Jim Thompsons house. It is a beautiful house with lovely gardens. There is also a nice restaurant in the gardens, if you have time to stop for a drink or something. Maybe you could go there on the morning of your departure flight and then take a taxi to the airport from there.

For the days in between Bangkok, I would go to Kanchanaburi. You will find plenty to do there for a couple of days. I recommend you stay at the Blue Star Guesthouse. If you dont mind paying 600 to 700 Bahts per night get a bungalow by the river. But if cost is an issue they also have nice rooms for around 200 Bahts.

Since you want to do things quickly, then book tours to everything you want to go to at the Blue Star Guesthouse. You will see posters on the walls for all tours available.

To get to Kanchanaburi take a bus from the Southern Bus Station in Bangkok. They go frequently as far as I know, so just go to the bus station and take the next one. The journey is around 3 hours.

I would skip the rest of the places on your list above. You really dont have enough time in my opinion.

Hi Prakash,

If you can rent a car with a GPS, you can do it easily! Avoid a taxi, it will cost you a small fortune for this.

Ok, if you leave the airport at let say 1pm, because of immigation and renting the car, Kanchanaburi will be max three hours drive. So I would drive to Kanchanaburi and see the bridge....you should be there around max 2-3pm. From there, drive up to Hell Fire Pass...check one of my last entry, there is a great place to stay just minutes from Hell Fire Pass...for info, it is around 65km from Kanchanaburi in middle of nowhere.

You sleep and rest in the camp. Early morning, you start by Hell Fire museum, than drive to Erewan Watefalls. The tiger place open only around 12pm, so this is your last stop.I don't have any idea of the floating market.

If you leave tiget temple around 2pm you will be back in town (Bagnkok) on 5th late afternoon. You could either spend one more day ON one of the rafts on the river kwai, or spend more time in Bangkok.

Send me a PM, I've got a blog entry on Kanchanaburi, we stay there last month for the week-end. Will be flying to Shanghai on the evening of 4th Nov, so not sure we can meet, but who knows!

Peter,

Your recommendation are apt and to the point. I have been following your recommendation for other blogs... they are indeed useful... obviously from the learned and the well travelled. I appreciate the pain you take to explain.

Barring unforseen circumstances, I think I will be in Kanchanaburi on 4th evening. Woulkd love to meet with you. Mel has recommended Blue Star Guest House. I checked the website and it looks good. However, since I am associated with the travel industry I have access to other hotels too. Will finalise soon.

Shall send you a PM shortly.

Thanks.
