I'm going to India for the first-time, and would love advice!| 25 Replies: « back 1 2 next » | The Travel Camel Shane Dallas Post Count: 1065 Msg: #21 7 weeks ago, November 4th 2009 | Dukoral is only available from a doctor (in Australia) so could be the same in other countries. | Kerala has the best food in India - and that is really saying something, considering how wonderful the food is in that country. If you can If you take the fast train (the Shatabdi Express), the time between Delhi and Agra is only 2.5 hours, so a really pleasant trip. Going from Jaipur and Agra is also possible (figure on more than 7 hours), but there are less trains. If (as occurred with me) there are no places on the train, it is a four hour journey by bus on a road which, by Indian standards, is good and reasonably safe. Regarding biting dogs and monkeys - carrying food on you is always going to attract them, so you need to be aware. You will see gangs of "street dogs" (as my friend who works with homeless dogs in India calls them) in certain cities of India - but they seem to be more of a menace at night then during the day. Also planning on Mumbai to Goa which I hear is an epic 12 hour trip! Fun times. If you need to do some detailed planning of train options, you should visit the official Indian Railways website. The official online booking website is with the IRCTC. You are strongly advised to only use this site. | I took lots of night trains in India, and they are a fantastic way to travel - try for either 2AC or 3AC - they are much more comfortable and you get to meet some interesting people. Also, when travelling on trains, bring a chain and lock to tie your bag securely when sleeping or going for a walk along the carriage. Many of the local people do it, so you should as well. I got around 6 of them, after I was bitten by a monkey in Thailand. Delhi to Agra is around 3 or 4 hours by train, if I remember accurately. The trains are conveniently timed, so you can even take a day trip to Agra from Delhi if you want. When in Agra, be sure to visit the Shanti Lodge rooftop restaruant. The food is great(Well the Indian food is great. The western food they try to make is not so great), but the view is spectacular. Here is photo we took from there.
