I found it to be the opposite way around. For example, the smallest note in dollars is, of course, $1. So something that is $1 (or a denomination of that) can only go as low as $1. In dong that's 17,500 dong. You can go alot lower than 17,500. | Also, I find it really confusing paying in dollars and getting dong change. You have to be really quick with your maths to work out the dollars change, the exchange rate and then whether you have enough dong in your hand. The currency of Vietnam is dong. Not dollars. It doesn't hurt to use a countries official, legal currency. It makes you look less like a tourist. And, consequently, perhaps slightly less likely to be ripped off. Of course, just my opinion. Kate TillOnTour tllhsr Post Count: 17 Msg: #6 27 days ago, October 29th 2009 | as i said. i used dong on the streets for things like food and tuktuk rides. but prices for trips, rooms, etc are always posted in usd. how should it be easier to pay in dong if they post the price in dollars. | "It makes you look less like a tourist." do you really believe anybody believes you are vietnamese if you pay in dong. lol. VanIsland VanIsland Post Count: 6 Msg: #7 26 days ago, October 30th 2009 | I found taking money out of the ATM at the airport was the easiest way to get some money when I arrived. There are also Currency Changers at the airport that offer fair exchange rates. I found it best to pay for everything in Dong currency, that way I didn't have to convert back to dollars in my head. The only problem I had was the number of zeros following every transaction. I once overpaid a taxi driver, the fare was 35,000 dong and I paid him 350,000 because I didn't look closely enough at the bills until after he had left. Luckily I got my money back when my guesthouse called the taxi company to tell them I had really overpaid the driver! Live and learn. | Number of Users: 5 | Number of Posts: 7 | |||||||||||||||
