matt becks Rebecca & Matt Post Count: 2 Msg: #1 56 days ago, October 8th 2009 | Hello all, | We are booked to start out RTW trip on the 11th December & on our route are to leave Bangkok on the 20th December this year & are now looking into the next stage of our travels... we want to go from Bangkok to Chiang Mai but there seem to be so many options fly/bus/train all with people giving good comments & bad comments about each on the net - as it is the Xmas period we wanted to get this sorted pretty soon so we don't miss out & find everything fully booked when we get there!! We also wanted to visit Kanachuburi but didn't know wether this is best to do at any point for a day/overnight trip... or if it is better to go here & then straight to Chiang mai.... any advice would be much apreciated!!!!! Thanks! PA Leslie Pierre-Alexandre Post Count: 866 Msg: #2 56 days ago, October 8th 2009 | Hi, | Kanchanaburi is not on the way to Chiang Mai, so you want to split the trip. For Chiang Mai, you may have a problem to get a train ticket if you book last time. Train is around 800 baht on way, but if you book now, you can fly for between 1500 and 1800 baht one way. Once you've got this, no more running to the train station and stress of wether or not you have a seat on the train. Considering the period, I would take my airline ticket now to be on the safe side if you know your dates. If you go to Kanchanaburi, and there are two or more of you, I would rent a car. You can rent a car for a day for 1,000 baht...way more than a train ticket, but a lot time gained...and it's way more confortable. Hope this help, Peter Jo Trouble Jo McCarthy Post Count: 3038 Msg: #3 55 days ago, October 9th 2009 | I flew with Air Asia - think I paid a far bit less than what Peter mentioned, but I didn't go during the peak Xmas period. | From what people said that had travelled on the overnight bus, what it takes out of you isn't worth the cheaper price. Car rental is cheaper than I would have thought Peter :-) PA Leslie Pierre-Alexandre Post Count: 866 Msg: #4 55 days ago, October 9th 2009 | Hi Jo, | I did check on airasia and bangkok airways and these were the price for 20th of December...don't forget, fuel has gone up again! For the rental, it can go lower, but this is with a reputable company, middle range car...and more important, with a proper insurance...I would not compromise on the insurance issue in Thailand. You can go for way lower for flights, but it's tricky around christmas. matt becks Rebecca & Matt Post Count: 2 Msg: #5 55 days ago, October 9th 2009 | Thanks for your comments guys!! I would have liked to just 'wing it' when we got there but I guess at xmas that just isn't the best option!! Can't wait to chill out when we get there as the 'office organiser' in me is still in full swing!!!! ha ha ha!! | Number of Users: 3 | Number of Posts: 5 | |||||||||||||
