Campervan in Europe from mid February

 Europe
Topic Type: Accomodation
We have 5 months from mid-February. Where should we go? Are we being realistic about campevanning with young children at that time of the year?

My Family and I are considering hiring a campervan for 5 months from Amsterdam from mid February and travelling around Europe. I need some general recommendations because it has been some time since I have travelled around Europe and I cant remember how comfortable it could be staying in a caravan park in a campervan. Are we going to freeze to death? We were thinking of driving from Amsterdam down to Spain with some stops on the way. We have young children under 4.
Thanks,
Natalie

Hello Natalie and welcome to the Forum!

If you are commencing in mid-February, I would suggest heading southwards first (Spain), and then heading north when the weather gets warmer. The roads in Europe are extremely good and it is easy to cover large distances in a day. Try to get to Portugal if you can, there are some great sights there. If you head along the southern coast in Spain, there will be plenty of places to stay and keep you occupied.

A good itinerary would be also to travel through Italy, then go through the Alps (Switzerland and Austria) commencing in April/May as there as some stunning camping sites there and the weather will be warmer then. You can head back into southern Germany and France before slowly making your way to Amsterdam.

I don't have children, but Europe is a fairly family friendly sort of place, so it shouldn't pose any extra difficulties than travel within your home country.

Also forgot to mention that there can be a great difference in car hire/lease prices across Europe. France used to be the cheapest option - but I'm unsure of how it compares to other countries now.

We are actually thinking of looking at buying a motorhome on a guaranteed buyback deal. Checked some websites and it is supposed to be quite easy to get this arranged in Amsterdam. Very little paperwork etc. I will look into the French option as well. I think the author who recommended Amsterdam was from Go Motorhoming in Europe. Might have to buy the book.
