Hi plan on flying into hanoi from hong kong 3rd jan then heading down the coast of vietnam stopping in each beach places then onto cambodia to include more beaches if possible and ankor wat then need to get to singapore for 1st feb (either fly from cambodia or bangkok). Does this seem realistic or would we be better flying in to Ho chi ming city and forgetting hanoi? Thank you for your opinion.

Hi Isla

That sounds doable in 4 weeks. You can either move quickly through places and see more, or move slower and stop at a choice number of places. Quality vs quantity if you like. The North will be relatively cold in January, so not so suitable for beaches. You probably want to spend more beach time South of Hue. If your whole trip is just for beaches then maybe just fly South and explore the beaches around there. If you fancy exploring some more of Vietnam's culture, nature and history then see the whole country.

Something along the lines of:
couple of nights in Hanoi then Halong Bay trip with 1 night on the boat and 1 night on Cat Ba (national park).

Overnight train or bus to Hue. A night in Hue to explore the ancient city and then the same or more in Hoi An. There are lots of tailors in Hoi An that make cheap clothes if that's your thing. tooThere are beaches around Hoi An too. The weather may be ok. We were there in February this year and the water was cold.

Overnight bus or train to Nha Trang. There is beach here and the weather should be hot.

Another bus to Mui Ne for more beach.

Mui Ne to Saigon. Bus from Saigon to Phnom Penh, and then Phnom Penh to Siem Reap for Angkor. To see the temples here properly you need a 3 day pass in my opinion. Some of the outer temples have less tourists and are thus more atmospheric than the famous ones. In Cambodia there are beach resorts in Sihanoukville, Kampot and Kep.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your quick reply kate, thanks for your advice. My boyfriend has the idea in his head that he wants to hire a motorbike/scooter and do some of the travelling on that independently, he is an accomplished driver and has driven in india etc so thats not a worry. We'll just see what happens, that is part of the fun, isn't it? Thanks again Isla
