pkwp Pip Post Count: 1 Msg: #1 14 weeks ago, September 22nd 2009 | Hi | I\'m heading to Thailand in Janurary and as i haven\'t travelling in years i want to start of doing some voluntery work to meet some people and give something back at the same time. I\'m thinking of heading North to start with, volunteer for a few weeks and then head into Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. From there i will return to Thailand and head to the Islands for some R&R. Does anyone have any recommendations for volunteer programs? I\'m not sure whether to Teach (I have a TEFL qualification, although never used it) work with Elephants or do some sort of conservation project. I\'ve been given a 3 month sabattical from work, although realistically i think i will need to extend this once i\'m travelling as from everything i\'ve read 3 months is not enough time to travel the 4 countries without bypassing some good bits. I\'m willing to be flexible and know from past experience you just have to go with the flow. As i\'m travelling alone any good tips would be greatly received. thanks Pip Mell Mell Post Count: 15166 Msg: #2 14 weeks ago, September 23rd 2009 | Hello Pip | Maybe you would be interested in volunteering in the Dada Childrens home, on the Burmese boarder. It is a home for single mothers and their children from Burma, who would have no other reasonable way to survive without this place. They seem to always be looking for volunteers to do just about anything. Teach English, play with the kids, gardening, sending appeal letters...... They charge a few Euros per day, but as far as I understand that includes accomodation and 3 vegetarian meals per day. You now even need a work permit to volunteer, or else you risk getting fined. | Rat on the Road Kris and Kate Post Count: 449 Msg: #4 13 weeks ago, September 25th 2009 | There is an organisation called Volunthai that arrange 1 month or more placements teaching in rural schools in Thailand. The plus point on this one versus others is that they only charge you about $100 or something to cover admin costs. No sky high costs to volunteer. | I've never used them, but I like the idea.
