Hi there

I'm arranging a South American trip in December 2009 and January 2010 and want to know if any others are planning a similar trip and want to come along for any part/parts of it. It's a 7 week trip starting in Rio in mid Dec and ending in Lima at the end of Jan. I'm just filling in the rest of it now :0)

My rough (and pretty flexible) travel list at the moment is:

Rio, Paraty, Sao Paolo
Iguazu Falls
Porto Allegre
Montevideo
Buenos Aires, Cordoba
Santiago, La Reina
Salt Lakes, Uyuni
Potosi, Sucre
La Paz, Lake Titicaca
Cuzco, Machu Picchu
Arequipa, Pisco
Lima

Not sure yet how long to spend in each place etc. I'm open to suggestions and willing to change places to others - so let me know. I was planning to travel with a friend, though he had to pull out (financial reasons :0( and it would be great to travel with fun, like-minded travellers!

A bit about me - I'm from Wellington (New Zealand), lawyer by day, and keen traveller. I'm learning a bit of Spanish at the moment - which hopefully will help communication go pretty smoothly.

If you're interested in meeting during this trip, let me know your plans and a bit about yourself - my e-mail is: . Or, if you have any good tips for a trip like this, I'd be glad to hear them.

Cheers

Dan

Hello Dan: Will be working with a beekeeper friend outside of Buenos Aires later this month and staying in South America for the winter. I am 59 years old, two kids, ages 21 and 23, one a pro. basketball player and the other a senior at Whitworth college in Spokane, Wa. I am a beekeeping consultant for Winrock Int., having worked in India and Tajikistan in the last two years. Last winter I travelled to Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand leaving early Dec. and returning in April.
My schedule is flexible, although will do some beekeeping work in Argentian and Chile during Nov. and Dec. Let me know your itenary, will return your message within a few days as I live in the countryside where service is non-existant.

Hi Doug

I will be flying into Rio in mid December 2009 and will fly out of Lima at the end of Jan 2009. I aim to travel south through a few places (listed in the first post) to Buenos Aires, then head north to Bolivia and on to Peru. I will probably skip Chile (as originally intended) this time, so things aren't too rushed.

Let me know what your plans are so we can see if they overlap.

What's it like to be a beekeeping assistant? Edmund Hillary, the first man to climb Everest (and a fellow kiwi) was a beekeeper :0) Reply to this

Hey Dan: Currently in east central Illinois assisting my brother harvesting 1200 acres of corn and soybeans which will take about two weeks. My plans are to travel shortly after harvest. Would love to catch up with you. I have owned and operated a commercial beekeeping business for thirty years in Illinois, Florida, Wisconsin. Arizona, California and Washington state. In 1984-86 I was a Peace Corp Volunteer in Jamaica as an Apiarist, developing the beekeeping industry where I married a Jamaican . My son was born in Jamaica and my daughter was born in Tuscon, Arizona.

Hi Kin

I plan to be in Peru near the end of Jan, and I'm looking to do the Inca Trail. It would be good to meet up around then. Maybe somewhere like Cuzco? What do you think?

When are you looking to book the hiking trip for the Inca Trail?

Where are you from Kin? Reply to this

Hey Doug

Sounds like your work really lets you travel around, that's great!

How does my rough itinerary fit in with your work schedule? I'm just thinking of the best time and place to meet up in SA. Let me know.

Hey Dan: Going to the travel agent this week to confirm flight arangements for the end of this month. I will stay in touch with you throughout my time in Argentina, as well as continued communication from our farm in Illinois. I know two friends will be coming from Wa. State for a visit to Argentina sometime mid-November, so will pass on the itenary as we figure out the logistics.
For your reading pleasure,. "Breakfast with Budda," what good books have you read? Will you be using the lonely planet as a guide book?
Walk good.,

Hi Dan,

I will be in South America at the same time as you, although working from Lima down to Rio between start of November to end January. Our paths might cross on the way up/down.

I too am a lawyer, from Glasgow, Scotland, and looking forward to my extended time off.

If you want to drop me an email, please contact me and I'll give you my address.

Hi Dan,

For the Inca Trail, I’m looking to book a Gap Adventures tour, it costs 2000AUD for a 12 day tour including Amazon rainforest. You can check out the tour on their website (The tour code is PAA) My travel agent told me I have to book this ASAP as the permit for the trail is limited and the site will be closed for maintenance during February, so I have 21st -23rd Jan 2010 in my mind at the moment. And I will probably book it within two weeks time. Do you have any good alternatives? The Inca Trail is the only one I will book it in advance, the others I just play it by ear.

Also, here is a bit more about me:

I’m a 30 years old graphic designer from Hong Kong and living in Melbourne for almost ten years, feeling bored at work and thinking the world should have more to offer, a keen traveler myself and love adventures. I’ve been to most of the countries in Aisa, and almost all the major cities in Australia. Backpacking Europe while study at University. This will be the first time to America. I’m a laid back and easy going person, take it easy is my motto. And have fun at the same time . Normally I travel alone but for a big trip like this, wouldn’t mind to catch up with some fellow travelers at different places, it gives me some more things to look forward to and tasks to do.

Let me know what do you think?

Cheers,

Kin

Hey Dan,

Im an aussie currently living in the UK. Have done a fair bit of travel around Europe over the last year and a bit.
Heading to the US and then down to Lima at the end of Dec then make my way across Bolivia, Brazil then to Argentina. Looks like we are going in the opposite direct but maybe somewhere in the middle we will cross paths. Travelling by myself for the SA leg so would be good to meet up with some people along the way.

Cheers,

Hey Kin

I'm probably looking at the 4 day Inca Trail myself. I looked at alternatives and there's the Salkantay trail (5 days, less crowded apparently), but they're sort of similar.

I got some helpful tips from other travellers and was able to find a good price for the Inca Trail ($450 US rather than the $700 USD approx I was quoted) so I might book that for mid-late Jan 09. I would love to do a longer trip but don't have that much time unfortunately.

Maybe if you're in Bolivia/Peru in mid Jan we can meet up? Reply to this

Hey Dan,

No worries, I'm also looking at alternatives for the Inca Trail, as I haven't booked in any yet, the reason I look at my one is because of the Amazon, and my agent recommends it because they are reliable and guarantee the permit but to be honesty it's a bit pricey.

Do you have more information about yours, I might just look at it and compare them, see which one I would do, cause I can so Amazon separately if the price is better. Thanks in advance.

I'm not planning to visit Bolivia but Peru is a must and I think we will be there at the same time. So, I'm sure we will meet up there.

Here is my itinerary:

Buenos Aires – 11/01
Lima - 21/01 (Inca Trail)
Sao Paulo - 6/02

Cheers,

Kin

Hey Kin

It's just the standard 4 day 'Classic Trail' hike/trek that ends up at the Sun Gate at Machu Picchu. I'm hoping to book it soon, I just need to figure out the dates so I will have enough time to see more of Peru before I hit Lima and fly home. Probably around 20-24 Jan 2010.

I see you arrive in Lima on 21 Jan, when do you think you'll do the trail?

Cheers

Hey Shaun

Sorry to take so long to reply, been busy! Yeah, looks like we're going in different directions, but maybe we'll meet around Argentina/Bolivia in Jan.

Have you drafted a rough itinerary yet?

Hi Dan,

Is Peru Treks the one you are looking to do? The price $450 is good but do you know is it reliable? I'm thinking to do it on 25th Jan. Do you have any reviews on this company?

Cheers

Hi Kin,

I've done the Inca Trail with Peru Treks (April 2006) - was more than happy with them. Had a great trip! Reply to this
