Hi all - Bit of a strange question. Is it ok to wear camouflage shorts throughout central and south america?
Thanks

Maybe you would be mistaken for the army, which would scare people, especially in Indian villages where the army have done brutal things to them.

I personally would avoid wearing anything whiile travelling, which could cause me to be mistaken for millitary or police.

Well, before chucking them, make sure they are a problem. If a lot of backpackers are wearing them, then maybe people are used to seeing them and dont always associate them with the army. I wouldnt want to be the only backpacker in an Indian village wearing combat gear though....

When I was in Iran I met an Australian guy. For his first few days in Iran he wore combat trousers and a kaki coloured T-shirt. The locals kept moving away from him and his friend and were unwilling to talk with them. When he changed his clothes, that all changed.

camouflage shorts are so popular among backpackers that it seems a bit like boyscouts

i suppose that one could argue they may be good for city use because they are fashionable , but from a practical point of view the pockets are often crap at keeping stuff in, and the side pockets are useful only for very low value stuff like a map or a few tissues which by the way is a must in the "toilet roll free" restaurants of south america.

One would think that army wear would be a lot more functional and practical.

fair point mell, though combats are not always official army pants.

im just saying i would base my judgement on the quality of the pockets because if your going to be wearing them every other day for a long trip you dont want to have to be constantly checking to make sure your stuff hasnt fallen out. ..and sure the side pockets are handy but putting a passport in there for example would be asking for trouble.
