Hello, Well you can search online for all available car rental agencies specifically in ROME. They have price quotations and booking services that you can access online. If your not sure if you can trust them, you can always check if they are BBB recommended. IF there is a small LOGO with "BBB" on their website then you are ensured. Oh! BBB means Better Business Bureau

Hi! I have used car hire agents for couple of times and had no problems with them. Usually local car rental secompanies do respect agents and try to offer their best service as they can provide them with lots of reservations (it's just my opinion, how it should work according to my logic). There are sites offering you to pay only little pre-payment and then the rest amount at rental desk, I think it is a bit safer, although I have done also full payment and didin't find any problem.

I used an agent to book a vehicle in Spain last year (I could also have booked with them in Italy if I wished) and they were fine. You just need to do a bit of independent searching before you give them your cash - I normally head to Google and then write the name of the company with words such as "complaints", "bad service", "problems" and the like. If they have a bad name, they usually appear in forums somewhere.

I usually book my car on the web at least 2 weeks before I get to my destination, because I have had problems with getting a car when I arrive at the airport without a pre-booked car. In pike season the car hire companies can be over-booked and you can end without no car at all. There are a lot of car hire companies that offer to book the car online and you can get even better prices from the agents than from the independent car hire companies.

I just wonder which are the companies which have such a bad name that you really don't advice to book with?

Lloyd, I think you need to do some independent research. I included some possible search terms in post six, but there could be other words you can use. Also, when booking with an agent, try to find out which car hire company you are booking with. I tend to go for the larger international companies just due to their reputation and the efforts these agencies make to maintain good customer relations.

My experience with the car hire agent is that they tell the name of the company only when you receive the voucher.

That is interesting, with the one I used, they did tell me who it was when I asked prior to confirming the booking.

I guess it depends on agent. Some of them could be afraid to tell you before as you could go directly to rental company.

This summer I visited my friends in Nice, France two times. Both times I rented a car. Searching for the lowest prices I came across Decode car hire. It's a brokerage company and they did not tell me the name of the company till I got the voucher. It was a really good deal and the service was ok.. I was satisfied with the rental company.. When I was making the booking for my second trip I realized that they have put the logos of the rental companies in their website.. When I checked the prices directly at the companies websites it was even more expensive.
