TheDrunkenMaster Dave Johnson Post Count: 4 Msg: #1 17 weeks ago, August 27th 2009 | Hi guys, | First post, so be gentle... especially as you\'re probably fed up of people posting about Thailand! I\'d like to go independently to Thailand in October for a few weeks, but seeing as I haven\'t done this sort of thing before, I\'m considering one of those gap year companies (real gap, I to I, real experience thailand). Anyone have any thoughts about these? One of them is doing a <snip> where I could win a 4-week trip there for writing about my ultimate trip. Writing\'s something I enjoy, so it seems worth a go. Either way, it\'d be useful to get some feedback because there\'s no guarantee i\'ll win, as I\'m not exactly George Orwell. Even though I\'ve cobbled together hols using flights, hotels, etc. from lastminute.com, this trip is too important to me to risk buggering it up. Any help would be much appreciated. I have been there 3 times without any tours. A copy of the Lonely Planet guide for Thailand would be useful if you do choose to travel independently. He picked up the language as well and still speaks it at the local Thai restaurant. He booked a flight at random and stayed at various motels, etc. depending on his whim that day. He had an absolute blast. He did end up getting hit my a tourist on a motorcycle while walking! It's a good thing he's in top shape! Take some extra spending money because everything is sooo inexpensive! Tattoo's, suits, dental work...you name it! There is A LOT of difference on prices for airlines and you really should research it well before booking! I found this site extremely helpful. <snip> | Good Luck! I hope you have the time of your life! Book a flight to Bangkok and go from there. Go to Khao San Road where you will meet hundreds of other people in the same boat as you. Maybe you will find some people to continue travelling with. Get a train North to Chiang Mai and do a three day trek (hilltribes, elephant riding and bamboo rafting). You'll meet more people there. Go South and hang out on some island beaches where again, you will meet people. Thailand is almost designed for independent travellers! I'll look into some of the things you've mentioned and come with a broad itinerary, then I'll be back for more advice! Thanks famil Alex Post Count: 4 Msg: #7 16 weeks ago, September 3rd 2009 | Last month I went to Krabi in Thailand.
