Activities around Leticia (no agency packages)

Looking for tips to organize activities in Leticia without going through an agency

Hi there,

I plan to travel to Leticia in mid-November. However, I've noticied that it's very hard to organize any activity in the area without going through a zillion-peso-package that, btw, I cannot afford.

My idea was to find an accomodation in Leticia and, from there, travel back and forth (if possible). I was wondering if I could arrange:

1. a visit to the Parque Nacional de Amacayacu
2. a trip to Puerto Narino as
3. I've been told that the Reserva Tarimboca is a nice place

I would be interested in spotting some pink dolphins, canopying, experiencing the jungle at night (either trekking or kayak), visiting a local community (I speak Spanish) and any other activity you might considerer thrilling.

Would it be possible to organize something like this from Leticia?

Thanks a lot!

Puerto Narino is easy - there's a boat goes daily @ 8am I think (there's several other later ones too). There's an office down by the docks that seems to cover all the companies that go. Cost 26 pesos one way and takes about 2 hours. Best to book the day before if you want the early boat. From there you hire a boat man to take you down to the laguna or out along the Amazon to where the dolphins hang out. We weren't so lucky on the day we went (I think even I boat man was astounded) but we still saw a few and waiting and watching was half the fun. There's a few places to stay overnight although make sure you get dinner early! Its a funny place, really colourfull, friendly and no motorised transport of any kind... other than the boats.

We stayed at a hostel about 11km out (think its on hostelworld) from Leticia and did a nightwalk from there. Most of what is around Leticia is secondary jungle - you need to walk 4 hours or more to get near primary. By daylight the route we took didn't seem too jungly at all - by night we seemed to be fairly tripping over spiders, some big and hairy, others slender and highly poisonous. And there were snakes to.

Didn't make it to the national parks but it might be you can get a boat up there. Or there are a few travel agents in Leticia - tourism isn't set up there quite to the extent it is in Peru or Bolivia. But that's part of its charm. Reply to this
