Your round the world trip, with a Round the World Air Ticket.
| How long did you go for? I am trying to figure out what is average, what is the very longest and what is the very shortest that people do. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Mell Mell Post Count: 15318 Msg: #1 20 weeks ago, August 14th 2009 | I have not yet ever bought a round the world ticket. It is however something I fancy doing, when I have enough time to make it worthwhile. I will probably spend one month doing overland travel at each place I stop. Or maybe longer, but I dont want to ruin the travel experience by reaching travel burnout. I would prefer to come home for a while and then go again, even if that makes it more expensive. | Well, what I mean is that I dont yet have anything to contribute to this thread. :D Anyway, what do you advise about the amount of time you spent with your Round the World trip? Was it just right, or should it have been longer or shorter? Would love to go for full year...why not one day, but that will have to wait that the kids reach university. Peter Rat on the Road Kris and Kate Post Count: 449 Msg: #3 20 weeks ago, August 15th 2009 | I was thinking the same. A round the world ticket stopping in Oz, New Zealand, one of the Pacific Islands, Fiji perhaps, and then the US - flying into SF and out of NY. | With a month in each place - well, perhaps less in Fiji. Of course, there is no way we could see all of each country in a month, but we could see some of the highlights without running out of money/reaching burnout. After so long travelling in Asia, I am accutely aware that these countries are a lot more expensive, so just over 3 months seems like something we could perhaps afford. Is that enough time???? PA Leslie Pierre-Alexandre Post Count: 881 Msg: #4 20 weeks ago, August 15th 2009 | Hi Kate, | You could do it with a ticket from Air New Zealnd, HKG-AKL-than on to Fiji-Raratonga-LAX....than on your own around USA, and fly LAX-Heathrow....that would be the cheapest option by far with what you want to do. Have a look at Air NZ on their web site. NZ and Australia, as well as US, you could go on a campevan to keep prices down. Peter Mell Mell Post Count: 15318 Msg: #5 20 weeks ago, August 15th 2009 | Those are incredible trips you do Peter. I would find that amount of time exciting if I already knew the destinations quite well, so know what are my favourite things to do in them. Then I could ignore the jet lag more because I wouldnt need to think about figuring out what to do in a particular place. I would just head to my favourite spots, sit back and enjoy the views. | ....highlights without running out of money/reaching burnout.![]() Yeah, I was thinking something like that. See the highlights, or else just be in the places absorbing their unique atmoshere. PA Leslie Pierre-Alexandre Post Count: 881 Msg: #6 20 weeks ago, August 15th 2009 | There is a very exiting thing with very short round-the-world...one example....diner and party in San Francisco, next day playing golf in Costa Rica...next night...having fun with other friends in Lima...2 days seeing Matchu Pichu...and the next day, viewing Brazil wining the world cup in Japan...when I'm on Copacabana beach...following the next day by few more friends in Paris. I know it is completely surreal, and that's the fun of it. | But don't take me wrong...doing it in a year is a good as doing it in 3 weeks....well...in a year may actually be way better! My first round-the-world was in 2002...did another one in 2003, than the last one in 2004...none since than, and no plans to do anymore of them...prices of air tickets have exploded since 2002 for that kind of routing. What I did in business/first in 2002...would be more expensive today...a lot more...actually economy today would be more than the one I did in 2002. So these are great souvenirs...but not to be done anytime soon again... Oh, and in 2002, I did the trip without a camera! My Mum hates me for that...kidding! Mell Mell Post Count: 15318 Msg: #7 20 weeks ago, August 15th 2009 | Strangely, I havent noticed the flights getting more expensive. I have scored some great bargains in the last few years. But, maybe round the world ticket are different. I havent been looking and comparing all the options yet. | Next Summer, I am thinking about taking my daughter travelling for the 1 and a half months Summer school vacation. Maybe a Round the World trip would be too expensive, for 2 of us, but maybe not. I will think about it some more. It would involve some cash blowing. We could afford it, but since we had some heavy money problems around 5 year ago, I have been more sensible with money than I really need to be to prevent getting problems again. Choosing where to go is fun! PA Leslie Pierre-Alexandre Post Count: 881 Msg: #8 20 weeks ago, August 15th 2009 | Mel, | You have "soft" version of the round-the-world by star alliance, around 2500euros, but than you have to add all the taxes. It does give you max 26,000 miles to do with 5 stops. If you want my opinion, there are better way to spend you money right now....except if you need to be in 2 or 3 different places of the world during this same month. And something funny...the same round-the-world starting in US or starting in Asia is simply double price in US...for the same thing. Peter Mell Mell Post Count: 15318 Msg: #9 20 weeks ago, August 15th 2009 | Yes, I think you might be right Peter. I will save the Round the World trip for when I have around 4 or 5 months to spare. There are still so many places in SE Asia I have not been, and the tickets to Bangkok for next August(when my daughers school vacation starts) are pretty good priced. I am thinking Laos and N. Thailand maybe. That should make a nice month and a half trip. | When I do go on the Round the World trip, I think another option I might choose is to spend a week in the more expensive countries such as Australia, US etc and a couple of months(or more) in places like maybe India or SE Asia or S and C America. I could just hit one city in the expensive countries and just hang out there and feel what it is like to be there and then a heap of time in the less expensive countries where I can afford to do anything I want. :) Number of Users: 3 | Number of Posts: 9
