Me and friend are both university students and are planning on travelling through Asia next summer between May and September. Since we want to maximize our time overseas as well as get an unique experience we were looking at working for up 2 months while we are travelling, ideally teaching english in a summer school or program. I haven't had any luck finding programs online with these sorts of employment (real gap has some that are similar but charge exorbitant amounts for their services). The country that we would like work to in is one of the following: Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam or Thailand. If anyone could give me some advice or connect me to some companies that offer such employment it would help me a lot.

Hey Alex

You don't usually need to pay someone to arrange teaching jobs in places like Vietnam and Thailand. There are a lot of jobs available.

However, most paid jobs want someone for more than 2 months, and they would like you to have your degree (it's a visa requirement in some countries - like Japan and Taiwan) and a TEFL certificate and/or some experience of teaching English.

That is not to say what you want to do is not possible.

It is the summer holidays in Vietnam when you want to come, and the kids all have extra English classes or summer camp. So you can get jobs working on them short-term. But this is more likely when you get here than before you arrive.

In Thailand they don't have terms like home - the terms are from May to October and November to February. So summer camp there would be in March and April. That's probably before you want to come.

Do you want to get paid or are you happy to do voluntary work? In your situation, voluntary work would be more likely.

If so, then you can find it easily once you get to Asia. Many rural schools will be more than happy to have you come and work with them for a month or more. Or you can contact organisations within the country to arrange something. The bottom line is that with volunteering, the organisations outside the country arranging it for you will charge high fees to put you in touch with the organisations within the country. If you go direct to the organisations within the country, you won't pay the high fees. You will usually need to pay for your accommodation and food but no service fees.

Have a surf around the net. Here is a starting point Volunthai

ajarn is a website for teachers in Thailand that might be of some help.

Hope this helps.

Kate
