Atko Sarah Post Count: 4 Msg: #1 19 weeks ago, August 10th 2009 | I know this is a qu that gets asked a lot.. but i\'m travelling to Bangkok to start a 6 months trip round asia, OZ & NZ.. Want to get an idea of where to stay in Bangkok for the first few nights when i get there. | Have had a look on the website http://www.khaosanroad.com/ but would welcome some reccommendations.. i want to have somewhere sorted that is not over expensive, but will be clean and safe and a gentle intro into Bangkok life!! Also as travelling alone would like to be somewhere very near Khao san Rd so i can meet fellow travellers. Any advice of places to go or even places to avoid would be appreciated! p.s. i see a lot of people would advise against pre-booking... is there a lot of difference in price? Mell Mell Post Count: 14927 Msg: #2 19 weeks ago, August 10th 2009 | Hello Sarah | Just take a bus from the international airport straight to the Khao San Road. The tourist bus just outside the airport goes very frequently and only costs a few Euros. They also speak English and will tell you when to get out. No need to book in advance. There has always been plenty of accomodation available when I arrived at the Khao San Road, even during tourist season. Also, you will get better prices if you find a place when you get there. Prices start from 2 Euros but 5 Euros per night is still a good price for a room. The 2 Euros per night ones take some searching around. All the rooms I stayed in in Thailand were clean, including the ones on the Khao San Road. As for safe, you will be safe, but be careful to not leave valuables in your room even if the door is locked. You will meet travellers all over the Khao San Road. It is a major backpacker hangout. It is pretty much the traditional backpacker place to hang out. Places to avoid: There arent really places to avoid on the Khao San Road, but the cafes and restaruants on the surrounding streets tend to be a bit more friendly and have better prices than the ones on the Khao San Road. ....there a lot of difference in price?![]() Well, have you found any rooms that can be pre booked that cost 5 Euros per night? If you arrive at night, then you want to pre-book because places will be full, you will be tired and not want to care about finding somewhere to stay. | If you are arriving in the day, then by all means, shop around. There will be more options. The bus from the airport is a better bet than a taxi. You can always book the first night somewhere, and then look for somewhere cheaper once you have found your Asia feet. That's what we tend to do in new places. Have you found the Sawasdee hotels website. http://www.sawasdee-hotels.com/ The rooms are small but have all you want. TV, en suite bathroom, air con. All for about £7 max. We stay in them all the time. Remember that the exchange rate has changed recently, so Thailand is not as cheap as it used to be. That 350 baht a night room used to be £5 when it was 70 baht to the pound , now it's £7 (it's 50 baht to the pound now). It's still cheap. But those bargain rooms are more expensive. The cheaper rooms don't have air con. Coming straight from home, you might want air con for the first couple of nights while you get used to the heat and the dehydration. Otherwise, we like the Four Sons hotels. There are about five. They usually have rooms. They again have all you want. The hotels on Khoa San Road are more expensive than those on the surrounding roads like Soi Rambuttri. # Bangkok is an easy place to start your trip.
