Hi,

Me and my boyfriend are going to have around a week to spend in Kerala, and would like info on Backwater tours. How expensive are the tours? Where can they be booked? Would you recommend staying overnight on a boat??

Also any other info or advice on what to see and do in Kerala, and best ways to travel round it would also be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Debbie

Tours are expensive but it is breathtaking!

We travelled on a budget so instead of the full tour, we caught a ferry for AUD $9 which took us on an 8 hour very slow tri0p down the backwaters from Allepy. It is very cheap and easy to find a driver who will drop you off and pick you up at the end for fairly cheap. We also went to Varkala and Kovalam beaches which were nice but very touristy. My favourite bit of Kerala was Cochin- but it's a big and busy city so it depends what you're after. I just loved the crazy bits of India! Have fun!

PS- You can probably get good info in the Lonely Planet books... Reply to this

Kerala is one of the most charming states of the country. People also called “God’ Own Country”. Kerala is a touristsparadise.Beach tourism and backwater tourism are the two sizzling side of Kerala tourism which deserve the attention of tourists from all over the world.
Backwater tourism destination in Kerala is Kumarakom. It is the ideal destination for eco tourism.

Hello
The backwater tourism is based in Alleppey which is called "Venice of the East".
There are so many boat operators who has country boats to big double bedded house boats.
The rates will vary from time to time according to the time of the season.
A night in the house boat will be a great experience. If that doesn't suit your budget, a half day trip on a country boat through the canals would be nice too.

Cheers.

Hi Debbie,

The backwater tours in kerala are mostly concentrated in Alleppey & kumarakom.

For a couple mostly houseboats charge Rs 5000/- per night for premium houseboat with All Meals included (kerala cuisines).

Luxury Houseboats charge about Rs 8000 to 18000, facilities offered are 3.5 star above.

There are some local houseboats that charge less than Rs 2000, but do not expect more facilities.

You can get houseboats in Alleppey & Kumarakom.

To stay in a houseboat for a night will be a good experience for you. You can travel any time in a year for this but from June to August if you prefer monsoon, that will be another experience. Like watching a rain by standing under an umbrella & staying in an houseboat is different.

If you want to do something different (before or after the backwater tour - which I also recommend as it was awesome) head up to Munnar. It's tea growing country, is really beautiful and a lot cooler than the coastal areas! You can just spend a day walking around the hills, seeing the ladies working in the fields and generally just soak the place up... it's really nice.

i have some information about kerala. and also want to share information with friends. Kerala has the highest Human Development Index of all Indian states; its literacy rate of 93.91%!i(MISSING)s the highest of any Indian state, and a survey in 2005 by Transparency International ranked it as the least corrupt state. It is also ranked as India's cleanest state.

Definitely splurge for an overnight trip! We ended up spending $70 CAD for one night on the boat for 2 people, all food included, a massive boat, 3 boatmen and just the two of us on the boat! For us, that was a great deal. You could even get a better deal, but our boat was pretty nice.
The scenery along the way was spectacular - the palm trees, locals fishing and doing laundry along the shores, it was great. One of the best experiences we've had.

One of the main attraction of south India tours is the Kerala backwater tour and it's really lots of happiness and beauty to share. It's not a much expensive option and you can book Houseboats from reliable tour providers. <snip> You can either plan a night at boat or can have accommodation in good hotels, it's up to you to decide and make deal with your operator on staying.

The journey through the greenery of Kerala is really delightful and have to share some lifetime moments to all. Give it life to your plan <snip>
Thanks 😊

Alleepey is the most popular destination for backwater of India, which is in Kerala. Houseboats per couple per night vary for different kind of boats. It can be from 1000 to 20,000. Better option is to book a complete tour package with backwater or with custom itinerary. I will recommend you to go to Yatra or WeAreHolidays for best tour packages. To kerala. Reply to this
