I have so many dream overland trips, hopefully when I'm old and wrinkly I'll be able to say I did some of them!! In no particular order:

Cycle from Lisbon (Portugal) to Istanbul (Turkey) i.e. Far West to East of Europe.
Train from London to Beijing, or even Vietnam, via. Trans-Mongolian.
Road trip from Alaska to Mexico down the Pacific coast.
Follow the Silk Road through the Stans to China.
Cairo to Cape Town and Dakar to Accra.
Motorcycle around SE Asia.
Do a really long walk (e.g. few months maybe one of the European pilgrimages or the length of the Rockies or something).

I think I'm missing a watery journey from the list, I'm not the best person at sea, but I'd love to take a slow boat journey say down the Mekong or the Amazon one day, or maybe sail around the fjords of Scandinavia.

I think sometimes the problem with 'epic' overland journeys is that you get so focused on making it from A to B that you can forget to stop and explore each area you pass through. I guess the best way round that is to plan for a really slow journey and lots of extra time...unless of course the main focus of your epic journey is to break records!

Wish I was on the road again now!! Reply to this

They don't have to be 'epic'!
Manageable and fun could be listed - just nice ideas for long or short trips to give us all inspiration! Reply to this

We've done a couple of overland journies in the past. We've spent a year travelling round South America, done the Gibraltar to Cape Town "Trans Africa" truck overland trip (plus extended start, middle and end "side" trips), and are now dreaming of combining following (roughly - a few detours will be needed!) the Silk Road, the Great Wall of China then back to Europe via the Trans-Siberian or Trans-Mongolian.

Some kind of loop from Greece or Turkey along the Silk Road, through China following the Great Wall, up through Mongolia and Russia then maybe the Balkans and/or Dalmation Coast etc. Or vice versa.

Or Coast to Coast through Canada. Or Island hopping the Spice Route or similar watery trade route.

But if I had a bit more cash and a few less responsibilities, I'd just start travelling and see where I got. Wander round NZ, hitch a ride on a boat of some kind off this beautiful island...who needs a destination! Reply to this

We did an overland in India which was really cool. We flew into Mumbai and travelled overland to Delhi. We stopped in Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaiselmere, Pushkar, Agra, and then flew our of Delhi. It was a fabulous experience that lasted 3 weeks.

I think we're going to do something similar next year...but we're going to head south. We want to fly into Mumbai again, but head to Goa and the Kerala coast. Then perhaps we will cheat and fly north so that we can see Varanasi and head overland to Kathmandu. What a trip that will be!!! Reply to this

Me and a couple of friends are going to go to Poland, buy an icecream van (one spotted in gumtree in Warsaw for £500 recently) and drive it to Azerbaijan, across to Tajikstan and on to China, where I plan to teach in an English school. Unfortunately the trip will cost money, which I have none of at the moment! Reply to this
