hey guys,
im planning on traveling to Asia in the next few months. I arrive at Thailand on the 15th of August, travel around till the start of September, from there go to Bali for a few weeks and then head to Vietnam till about the 10th of October. To be more specific in Thailand I\'ll be beginning at Bangkok for a couple of days, then up to Chang Mai, followed by Kho Samui/Phuket/Phi Phi and Phan nang. Vietnam im a little unsure of where ill be at this stage but ll probably be travelling around abit.
I know this has been touched on in some other posts but i was after more information from people who have travelled to those places during these months. I am concerned about the weather. A big reason im concerned is because one motive for going is to get away from the cold where i am and into some hot sunny weather! Im aware from researching a bit that these months are the wet season for Thailand and Vietnam but wondering how wet is wet, and if i will see a fair bit of sun or not?

I am also wondering if anyone could help me with the right places to go etc in both Vietnam and Thailand for someone who will be traveling alone, up for meeting other backpackers and some good social nightlife!

any responses are really appreciated!!! thanks :) Reply to this

Hello Samara

The rainy season is not so bad. Most of the rain falls at night. You would need to get very unlucky not to have several hot sunshiney hours everyday. And it is never cold in Thailand. If you stand out in the rain, it is like being under a warm shower.

Thailand is a peaceful place for women to travel. It is the only country in the world where I never experienced sexual harassment(not from the locals anyway). Violent assaults against women are rare in Thailand too. Your money and valuables are not however as safe as your body is in Thailand. Beware of theft and scams.

Everywhere except way off the beaten track you will meet backpackers in Thailand to socialise with. Thailand is backpacker land.

I havent been to Vietnam, so cant given any opinions on that.

So far the monsoon in Vietnam seems wetter than Thailand. In the North it has rained every day this week - and rained for most of the day. The rain varies between very heavy and lighter. There have been a few thunder storms this week. We have seen a lot of flooding (the drainage is pretty terrible where we live!).

When we lived in Thailand it was much as Mell says: rain for maybe an hour in the late afternoon/evening. Very heavy rain, but for a short amount of time.

However, it's still very warm here. Hot actually. So you are still escaping the cold weather at home. When it's not raining the sun comes out and it's very nice.

As for where to go in Vietnam - where are you flying to? You can either travel from North to South or visa versa. Or you can concentrate on either the North or the South. If you have two weeks or less I would advise the second option. If you have 3 or more weeks you can do a good North to South trip and see places along the way.
